VAAL THURSDAY JULY 13 FORMGUIDES, SELECTIONS, PERMUTATIONS

*Today's scheduled Turffontein Standside meeting has been moved to the Vaal because of the water outage.

David Thiselton

R1
Preview: LONGSWORD (7) looks to be a decent and progressive sort who will enjoy running over this trip on the Standside course with it's long straight. BROTHERHOODOFMAGIC (1) has some fair form and could earn if able to overcome the widest draw. LIVEBYTHESWORD (6)(SCRATCHED) also has a chance of earning here. (David Thiselton 7-1-6)

R2
Preview: JUST BE LEKKER (2) won in impressive style on debut and in a good time despite being a 100/1 shot and she can make it a quick double for the underrated sire William Longsword. NO FILTER's (3) form has been well franked and she is a contender. BAVARIAN BEAUTY (1) won well second time out and being by Querari ouit of a Silvanbo mare can continue to improve. (David Thiselton 2-3-1)

R3
Preview:
BACK IN BUSINESS (1) is well regarded and could have benefited from a three month layoff. SOUTHERN SKIES (5) did beat Back In Business last time they met but there was not much in it and the latter was slowly away that day and looks progressive. BOWL FIRST (4) ran well in two runs out of the maidens and this trip should be ideal after a layoff. (David Thiselton 1-5-4)

R4
Preview:
MAMBO'S CALL (6) ran quite well over sprints and now has pole position over a step up in trip he should relish. FUSHIMI INARI (4) is by Danon Platina so can build on the good second last time although he has a tough draw. HOTARUBI (5) is knocking on the door and should but does have a tricky draw to overcome. (David Thiselton 6-4-5)

R5
Preview:
ROYAL GUIDE (2) is talented and returned with some mucous evident last time so can improve on that and is the one to beat. MABONENG (7) is in good form and although having to overcome a five point raise and having tio take on the boys she has a good draw this time. DUNGEONS (5) has dropped to a competitive mark and is drawn in pole. SILENT TRIGGER (4) has soem decent Cape Town form but does have a tough draw on his Highveld debut. PEWTER SKY (3) had a hard task last time and can do well if capturing his best and overcoming a wide draw. NAPOLEON (6) disappointed last time but on his best form has a chance here and can't be left out. (David Thiselton 2-7-5-4-3-6)

R6
Preview:
MELECH (6) finished just 4,95 lengths behind Charles Dickens last time and from pole position is the one to beat. GILDED BUTTERFLY (2) won the Gr 2 Gerald Rosenberg impressively beating subsequent July third-placed Bless My Stars easily and should be a big runner if able to negotiate a tricky draw. EYE OF THE PROPHET (1) won the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas over this course and distance and has a fair draw plus Venniker can take her 1,5kg claim here, but he does still have to give weight to the whole field. (David Thiselton 6-2-1)

R7
Preview:
IVY LEAGUE (4) ran a cracker in good company last time and off an 85 merit rating can keep up the current trend of decent two-year-olds winning handicaps. MAMAQUERA (8) is in fine form and should be involved over a suitable trip although she does have a tricky draw. SAVE THE QUEEN (1) has a better draw than last time and can be involved. (David Thiselton 4-8-1)

R8
Preview:
IN THE BEGINNING (2) should enjoy the step back to this trip having beaten Flowerbomb the last time she ran over a sprint and the latter has won since. WHAT A HONEY (4) has ability and can build on her close second last time. TAYOOBA (7) has the ability to be involved here off a competitive mark. (David Thiselton 2-4-7)

R9
Preview:
TUSCAN GOLD (5) (SCRATCHED) has decent Cape Town form and the Peter yard having been doing extremely well with ex Cape Town horses. COMING IN HOT (2) is capable of being involved here. DARK TIDE (8) is in hard-knocking form. LAW OF SUCCESS (4) looks to be a progressive sort and starts off a reasonable handicap mark. GAL GADOT (9) has run well in her last two and can't be ignored. (David Thiselton 5-2-8-4-9)

REUNION OUT TO PROVE HIS CLASS TODAY

David Thiselton

The Vaal Classic track stages an eight race meeting today and there will be some good horses in action considering it is a mid-winter fixture.

The highest rated race on the card is a Middle Stakes event over 1800m and the highly regarded Reunion and the progressive Lady Amherst look set to fight it out. Reunion is officially 2.5kg under sufferance with Lady Amherst off his 93 merit rating but that rating is likely capped as he waltzed in by 5,30 lengths last time over 2000m. The Flower Alley three-year-old lost his way for a while after his impressive debut but gelding and a change in tactics from handy to coming from the off the pace has seen him coming into his own. He is drawn well with VDJ-winning jockey Gavin Lerena up and will take a power of beating. However, Lady Amherst won't go down without a fight. This big filly is improving in her four-year-old year in the typical style of a progeny of Ideal World and over an ideal trip will be charging for home if finding cover from a good barrier position of two. Tyrus Express goes well for Muzi Yeni and makes most appeal of the rest although he has a tough draw to overcome.

In the first race over 1600m Safe Passage, who is a Silvano c**t out of Grade 2 Debutante (1200m) winner My Sanctuary, made eyecatching late progress on debut over 1200m after being baulked for a run and second time out over this trip on Turffontein Inside was green from a wide draw but did make some progress from well back to finish a 2,40 length fourth. The winner of that race Rain In Holland has won both of her subsequent starts comfortably and second and third-placed horses. Starrywinternight and Iron Will, both won next time out. Safe Passage now has a plum draw of two so this scopey sort should get off the mark. He won't have it all his way as King Arthur stayed on well last time to be beaten just two lengths by Safe Passage and he has a fair draw of six under Muzi Yeni. The first-timer This Generation is interesting being by Flower Alley and being a half-brother to the Elusive Fort Grade 3 Prix du Cap winner Elusive Heart.

In the second race over 1600m the scopey Flower Alley filly Wisteria Avenue could give Mike de K**k a quick double. She was outpaced over 1160m on debut but was making eyecatching late progress once the penny had dropped. She looks likely to enjoy the step up in trip. The first-timer Twenty Four Kay is by Twice Over out of a one-time-winning Spectrum mare who is a half-sister to Pomodoro and she was joint favourite in the early market.

In the third over 1500m the effective front-running filly La Luvia beat the useful Wisteria Walk last time when second in a Pinnacle over 1400m. The best weighted Bold Fortune is only half-a-kilogram well in with La Luvia but she has not put in as good a performance as the latter did last time. Topweight Naartje is 1.5 kg under sufferance with Bold Fortune and this talented Vercingetorix gelding also has a shout, although he probably prefers a touch further.

The fourth is an uninspiring maiden handicap. The hard-knocking Arizona Lady carries only 55kg and could get it right at last from pole position over a suitable 1700m trip. However, Parker Getrix ran a fine one length third in his penultimate start over 1600m and the form was franked when the winner Spartan Warrior finished second first-time out the maidens. One Block, Signals, The Boogeyman, Passing Shot and Madabout Fashion also warrant respect for wider permutations.

In the sixth race over 2000m All Aglow showed a good kick when going for home from a handy position over 1800m last time and only just held on and on pedigree should enjoy the further step up in trip. However she does have a tricky draw of seven and the progressive topweight Southern Song, who jumps from draw six, will also be a big runner. Rock You has run some good races up to 1800m and can also be included.

In the seventh over 1600m Kapama is 2.5kg better off with the rangy Ancestral Prayer for a 1,90 length beating over 1800m and is distance suited, well drawn and has a 1,5kg claimer up. Ancestral Prayer has a lot of scope and should produce a late charge. The topweight Beyond The Runway was not at all disgraced in third second time out after a good win on debut and she should relish the step up in trip too being by Mogok and a full-sister to the useful four-time winner from 1600m to 2000m Runalong.

The last race over 1600m looks likely to be fought out by the hard-knocking and improving Funky Music, the well drawn and consistent Nordic Rebel and the in-form Oyster King.
