Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates? Let’s unpack it... 👇

Pilates was designed as a full-body method that can be practised on the mat or on spring-assisted apparatus, with the whole body working together rather than in isolation.

In Mat Pilates, you are working with your own body weight, which means your core, control, alignment and body awareness have to do the heavy lifting.
It may look simple on paper, but it is never “easy” when it is done properly.

The Reformer adds another layer.

Joseph Pilates developed apparatus to support and challenge the body, and the springs create resistance that can assist, refine or intensify a movement depending on how it is used.

That is exactly why it can feel supportive and demanding at the same time.

Mat and Reformer are not competing with each other - they work together.

Mat builds the foundation, while the Reformer gives you feedback, variation and progression, so you can develop strength and control from different angles.

So, which should you do?

Ideally, both.
Your body does not need to pick sides - it needs the right work.🤍

Things we wish every Pilates beginner knew 👇

✨Pilates is not just about doing more reps - the resistance you choose, the speed you move, and the intention behind each rep is where the magic happens.

✨A little shaking does not mean you are weak. It often means your muscles are working hard and your nervous system is learning how to control the movement.

✨Progress is not always visible at first. The earliest changes are internal - better coordination, more confidence, and greater body awareness. The mirror usually catches up later ;)

✨Soreness is not the goal. Strength, control and consistency matter far more than how “burny” a session feels.

✨Consistency is key! Once a week can help, but a more regular practice will usually build results more effectively.

The fundamentals matter because they teach your body how to move well before we ask it to do more. 🤍

At MWM, we return to the basics often because that is where control, awareness, and precision are built.

When you understand the foundation, progression feels more natural and movement becomes more intentional.
