There’s something timeless about circus in the open air 🎪🎡🌸

Long before modern training spaces, circus was a travelling art, performed beneath canvas, under open skies and wherever a crowd could gather.

The apparatus may have evolved and the techniques may have changed, but that sense of wonder remains the same.

An aerialist climbs above the crowd, the silks catch the breeze, and for a few moments everyone looks up.

WHAT MADE THIS? 👀

This rather enormous footprint cast has just joined the South Coast Cabinet of Curiosities… and it comes with one hell of a story!!! 🎪🐾

The original print formed part of a trackway discovered by Neil Waters and John Maguire in South Australia in 2016. Its unusual shape drew attention because of its resemblance to the footprint of one of Australia’s most famous extinct animals… ➡️➡️➡️

The Thylacine! 🐾

The thing is… It’s big… Really big!

That leaves plenty of room for questions. Could the substrate have exaggerated its size? Could it have been left by an unusually large animal or a lager species? Could this be evidence of the continued existence of the thylacine? If not a thylacine… then what?

The track’s five-toed arrangement, broad central pad and overall elongated, somewhat hand-like shape are the distinct features that make this track so compelling.

The cast was donated to our collection by Neil Waters, President of the Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia (TAGOA), who investigated the trackway and believes it may have been left by a surviving thylacine.

People will debate the source of this print, the thylacine is officially considered recently extinct, but that’s exactly why we love having pieces like this in the Cabinet!

Something walked across that ground and left those tracks behind…

The cast is now on display alongside our thylacine skull replica and other material exploring the history and enduring mystery of the marsupial wolf.
