π WHAT A DAY FOR FNQ RUGBY! π
Today was a fantastic showcase of the talent, passion and strength of rugby in Far North Queensland.
Our junior representative teams were simply outstanding, going undefeated across all age groups! Our Under 12 Mixed side was dominant, our Under 13s and Under 14s were tough and resilient, while our Under 16s sent a clear message that they will be a team to watch at the Queensland Country Championships later this year.
A huge congratulations to all of our coaches and support staff who prepared these squads so well. The players should also be incredibly proud of how they adapted from the 13-man game they are currently playing each week to produce such high-quality Rugby Union performances.
Our Thunder Colts put in a courageous effort against an extended Townsville Brolgas squad. Despite the 33-12 scoreline, they were highly competitive throughout and several players have undoubtedly caught the attention of Queensland Country selectors.
The Lightning Women displayed tremendous heart and determination all day. While the final score of 41-12 didn't truly reflect the intensity of the contest, a lack of bench depth eventually took its toll. There were some outstanding individual performances that have certainly put players into Queensland Country selection discussions.
To cap off a memorable day, our Thunder Men secured a hard-fought 18-15 victory over a highly regarded Townsville Brolgas outfit. It was a fantastic team performance and a fitting reward for the hard work that has gone into representative rugby in FNQ.
A sincere thank you to the Townsville Brolgas players, coaches, officials and supporters for making the trip north to Cairns and helping make another North Queensland Championships a great success. The rivalry between our regions continues to strengthen rugby across North Queensland, and we look forward to continuing the tradition in the years ahead.
Congratulations to every player, coach, manager, volunteer, referee and supporter who contributed to this FNQ Rugby success. The quality of our club competition continues to produce representative teams capable of competing with the best in regional Queensland.
We now turn our attention to the Queensland Country Championships in Townsville in late June and continue building an even stronger representative rugby program for 2027 and beyond.
ππ FNQ Rugby is heading in the right direction.
