Lex Anderson Running Technique Coach

Lex Anderson Running Technique Coach Simplistically, the coaching I provide is in the form of changing or reorganising the way you run.

This is to improve your speed, economy, or for injury prevention. It is easily tailored to your sport and can include any sports specific movement. I have been involved in coaching running, speed and movement, and Strength & Conditioning (S&C) for over 20 years. Initially employed as a S&C coach for the NTL franchise Crusaders and then appointed by the ACT Academy of Sport (ACTAS) as the S&C coach for Men's Hockey. Due to my experience/expertise and results achieved in speed development and agility, I was subsequently employed as ACTAS Speed & Movement Coach. As far as I understand, I am the only person to hold such a role in the NTC (AIS and State Academies) system. I have since been employed by professional sporting teams such as the Brumbies and the Canberra Raiders, consulted to Australian programs in Football, Softball and Hockey, individual athletes at international and national levels, also well as plethora of sports at national and state levels. Approximately 10 years ago I started my own business specialising in improving/altering running mechanics to better improve performance and enhance injury prevention. This has given me a unique understanding of gait dysfunction and allowed me to develop an (original) approach to assess, prescribe and solve running problems.

RUNNiNG WHISPERER FAMiLY UPDATE - Heidi
SOME CUE's still SURPRISE ME in the DIFFERENCE they CAN MAKE

Heidi had told me how well she thought our recent session had gone and what a difference the cue was making = so I asked her if she would mind writing something about it!
Below is some of a text message Heidi sent.
............AND I have to admit, even I was 'blown away', by just HOW EFFECTIVE the CUE really was!!!

" ..... I have been struggling with tendinopathy for around 10 months but have been managing quite well with the help of my team, including the running wizard, Lex. After a crazy month of competition, I recently had a big flare up and lots of pain which stopped me in my tracks. Running was suddenly unpleasant. I went along to my usual session with Lex and he noticed my right arm was not swinging at all so he cued me to relax my tricep, yep my tricep!! After two run throughs I felt relief in my left glute and hamstring….what?!!! He wasn’t finished there. He then re-introduced me to an old cue to relieve the tension around my left shoulder to correct the swing of my left arm. This one was a bit trickier but when I got it right and paired it with the tricep cue, the pain in my left hip completely disappeared. Two days later went for a little jog to practice the cues and ran almost pain free for the first time in weeks. It seems tension in my upper body creates imbalances in my run."

Really what I do is such an 'interesting ride' and the reactions you can get from them never cease to amaze!!
Thanks Heidi!!!

A REVIEW From ALICIA N.

Before you start to read this, (again) I need to say how lucky to be able to train people who make my job a genuine pleasure!!

'We would highly recommend Lex Anderson to anyone that is struggling with their running, he has the ability to see things that the normal eye would not see. My daughter had been struggling with her sprinting, which she was suffering from crippling heal pain to the point of not being able to walk after a race and regressing times in her sprints. We had been to a podiatrist, attempted all that we could but she was becoming even more frustrated. After a few sessions with Lex and his incredible knowledge of running but also the mechanics of how the mind and body work together and sometimes not, he helped us find out the real cause of her current concerns. Remarkably after about 10mths of trying to correct an issue (prior to meeting Lex) he has been able to provide her with different strategies to help by using her core more and different cues. He explains the reasoning behind every action and the reaction. I can proudly say she is now running with little to no pain, and grinning from ear to ear with those PB’s!!'

WHAT EXACTLY IS A RUNNERS HIGH
........ an article from HEALTHLINE

Perhaps you should read it just for better mental health
.......... or maybe just to get high!!!!

A runner’s high is a short-lasting feeling of bliss that occurs after exercise or running. Not everyone who runs experiences a runner’s high. Learn what causes this feeling to occur.

RUNNiNG WHISPERER FAMiLY UPDATE - Adam R
IMPROVISING and COMBINING TWO COORDINATION CUES
....... to TAKE PRESSURE from FOOT by STABILISING MOVEMENT

This is a variation on the 'NEW' hip (coordination) cue I have been trialling in the last three weeks. The variation being (in this case) to get Adam to use a second coordination cue at the same time.
I wasn't really sure, on trying this, if the two cues could even be done together or within the same STRIDE!
So while the bilateral coordination cue had given us a slight change, ADDING the lateral (same side) cue gave an FORWARD DRIVE of the LEFT KNEE and an an earlier LIFT ('pop') on the ground contact.

SO ..... in this post the first video is Adam's run from an earlier session and in the second video is the cue we started to DEVELOP, as noted, to take LOAD away from his LEFT leg.

PROBABLY SAFE to SAY, JUST WATCH THE CONTACT TIME and GAIT of the LEFT LEG!!!!
AND, again I should stress\being able to ADAPT in order to GET a SOLUTION to an individual or idiosyncratic ISSUE (ie making up this CUE on the SPOT) is what can ONLY be done when you have been doing this for a VERY LONG time!!!

Very NICE work, ADAM!!!! See less

RUNNiNG WHISPERER FAMiLY UPDATE - Deb
REDUCTION of TENSION TIMED with HIP EXTENSION ........
From our last SESSION

YEP, another post of Deb's (current) journey to a better run. I may NOT HAVE stressed this before but Deb is one of my longest suffering athletes. And one of the most difficult movement patterns I have been confronted with (hence her long suffering). The intrinsically interesting point here is OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS WE HAVE MADE MORE ADVANCES (in her run) THAN in the PREVIOUS 3-4 YEARS.
YES, she has been VERY PATIENT in waiting for me to work out/INVENT/make up NEW CUES to SOLVE SPECIFIC ISSUES in HER RUN.
..........AND at THIS POINT I really NEED TO SINCERELY THANK FOR WHAT I HAVE LEARNT - IT HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED MY COACHING ABILITY/s!!!!

The first video from the start of the year. The second video is from our last session 10 days ago. We are using our recent improvements in stability to better coordinate her RIGHT HIP EXTENSION.
I will leave it up to you to SPOT ANY/ALL DIFFERENCES?

AS ALWAYS, just great stuff, DEB!!!!!!!!!

The RUN WHISPERING METHOD:
........GREG NUCKOLS and THE POWER OF ORTHODOXY

Just as an addendum to last Friday's post on 'Intellectual Property', below is a some discussion on the DANGERS of ALWAYS USING 'an orthodox mindset'! The very definition of this is the "authorised or generally accepted theory, doctrine, or practice.”

By our very nature of what I do at ‘The Running Whisperer’ it could be argued that in our ability to push boundaries and discover new ways to continually improve movement we are almost the antithesis of ‘orthodoxy’.
This ‘orthodoxy’ is forced on us by the TRADITION and CONSERVATIVE nature that exists in so many sport, and sports training, and the CONFIRMATION BIAS consequently imposed.

Below is part of an A.I. summary of a number of articles and commentary by Greg on this subject ..........

"Greg Nuckols, the founder of Stronger by Science, has spoken and written extensively on why dogmatic, traditional, or "orthodox" thought processes act as a major barrier to progress in sports and strength training. Rather than relying on rigid rules, Nuckols advocates for a flexible, evidence-based mindset that values individual nuance over "broscience" or unwavering loyalty to specific programs. [1, 2, 3]
The primary dangers of falling into orthodox thinking patterns include:

1. The Ecological Fallacy (Group Data vs. The Individual)
Orthodox training systems often take a single methodology—whether it is a specific scientific study or a famous program like Starting Strength—and dictate that it works universally. Nuckols frequently warns against the ecological fallacy: assuming that because an approach works well for a group on average, it will work perfectly for every single individual within that group. [1, 2, 3]
• The Danger: Individuals have vastly different recovery capacities, biomechanical leverage, and genetic adaptations. Forcing yourself into a rigid "orthodox" program ignoring these variations often leads to stalled progress or injury. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2. Blind Loyalty to Programs (The "Sunk Cost" Trap)
Orthodoxy fosters a mindset where a program cannot fail; only the athlete can fail. If an athlete plateaus or backslides on a highly praised orthodox routine, the community often blames the lifter for "not eating enough," "not sleeping enough," or lacking mental toughness. [1, 2]
• The Danger: Nuckols advises that if you experience a consistent string of bad days, you shouldn't blindly stick to a program just because it used to work or because it is popular. Dogma stops athletes from critically evaluating and optimizing their training. [1]

3. Misinterpreting Science as Absolute Law
While Nuckols is a staunch proponent of sports science, he actively critiques "scientific orthodoxy"—the tendency for lifters to take a single newly published abstract or a specific meta-analysis and turn it into an unshakeable rule. [1, 2]
• The Danger: Science provides averages and generalized mechanisms, not localized absolute truths. Believing that there is only one "scientifically optimal" way to train closes the door to practical trial-and-error, which Nuckols argues is essential for long-term athletic development. [1, 2, 3]

A REFERENCE from MARK T.

As always, before you start to read this I need say I am (so) lucky to be able to train people make my job a genuine pleasure!!

' ..... I was recommended to visit Lex by my chiropractor, to see if he could help with ongoing injury problems. Lex quickly identified flaws in my technique and had me running more efficiently after just 1 session. I have continued to see him as required and every time he provides additional refinements in technique. This gas ensured I can run quicker and further with less effort.

I highly recommend Lex to anyone who wants to be a better runner.
Oh, and he represents very good value for money.'

Thanks Mark = very much appreciated!!
