🔴⚫️ ON TUESDAY evening, Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bat against Knoxfield at Alan Smith Oval, Pinks Reserve. Andy Solomons and Jack Childs got the Redbacks off to a good start with an opening stand of 64 in 8 overs when Childs was caught by Noah Paroissien, bowled Thameera Mudiyanselage for 13 off 19 balls. After the score had reached 97 from 10.5 overs, Andy Solomons was the second wicket to fall, caught by Mahima Kotuwilab off the bowling of Raveen Sayer for a scintillating 63 off 42 balls, including 2 fours and 6 towering sixes. Luke Ivanovic, who had come in at number 3, and Dasun Mabogodage took the score to 122 after 14.3 overs when Dasun, attempting to lift the run rate, was out caught by Adam Maloney for 7 off 10 balls (1 four), giving Sayer his second wicket. Captain Will Beard was the next batsman out for 10 off 8 balls (1 four) and KiIsyth were now 4/145 off 17.2 overs. New recruit, Nuwan Kariyawasam, came in next and dispatched the first ball he faced for a huge six over mid-wicket. Unfortunately, he was out caught two balls later, giving Mudiyanselage two wickets in the same over with Kilsyth now 5/151 from 17.5 overs. It was soon 6/153 after 18.5 overs when Luke Ivanovic, who had batted stylishly for 28 off 29 balls (1 four), was caught by Jessie Smyth off Chandima Abeykoon. In the end, Kilsyth did well to get to 6/164 off their allotted 20 overs, with Chris Pahi 7* off 6 balls and Nuwan Sampath 5* off 3 balls. The multiple wicket takers for Knoxfield were Thameera Mudiyanselage, 3/24 off 4 overs, Raveen Sayer 2/33 off 4 overs, and Chandima Abeykoon 1/24 off 4 overs.
Knoxfield seemed to have the run chase under control when they were 0/68 off the first 7 overs. Then two wickets fell in the 8th over. Firstly, Andy Solomons got the breakthrough when the left-handed Chandima Abeykoon, who was batting with great authority, was brilliantly caught by Lahiru Randeepa at deep mid-wicket for 45 off 34 balls (4 fours and 3 sixes). Then Jack Childs effected an under-arm direct hit run out from mid-on to dismiss fellow opener, Chris Rumble, for 22 off 20 balls (2 fours and 1 six), to have Knoxfield 2/71 after 7.4 overs. However, Knoxfield kept piling on the runs to reach 2/99 off 10.5 overs. Then a huge hit to long-on was well caught by Nuwan Sampath right on the boundary to dismiss Raveen Sayer for 9 off 9 balls (1 four) off the last ball of the 11th over which was bowled by spinner Will Beard. Knoxfield were now 3/99. Then, on the second ball of Will Beard’s next over, Andy Solomons took a blinder of a catch at backward point, horizontal to the ground, to dismiss number 3 bat Mahima Kotuwila for a brisk 26 off 18 balls (2 fours), and the score was now 4/106. Two balls later, it was 5/108 when there was confusion in the running between wickets and a throw from Matthew Smith to Will Beard at the bowler’s end resulted in a run out. Then on the last ball of the over, a skied hit to the point area was caught by Andy Solomons to see Knoxfield on 6/109 after 13 overs, and Kilsyth fighting their way back into the game. After having lost 4/10, Knoxfield now needed 55 runs off 7 overs with four wickets in hand. They got to 6/137 off 15.5 overs, needing 28 off 25 balls to win, and although the lights were on, conditions were gloomy. Medium pacer Luke Ivanovic then struck with a vital wicket (bowled), on the last ball of the 16th over to keep Kilsyth’s hopes alive. The eighth wicket fell on 144 at the end of the 17th over when Andy Solomons bowled Captain Arun Chelvan for 26 off 21 balls (2 fours). Knoxfield now required 21 off 3 overs and the game was going down to the wire. Injured opening bowler Nuwan Sampath came back into the attack off a shortened run and kept the situation under control with only five runs coming from his over. Seven runs were taken from Udara De Silva’s next over with the score now 9/156 off 19 overs. So, it came down to the last over with Knoxfield requiring nine to win and Kilsyth needing to restrict the scoring to seven runs. The responsibility was left to Nuwan Sampath to bowl the last over. The first ball was a wide, then a dot ball and a two. Knoxfield now needed six runs to win off four balls to win. But Sampath bowled superbly and the next ball was a dot followed by two singles. So, with one ball remaining, Knoxfield needed a boundary to win, and Kilsyth needed to restrict the scoring to two runs. The last ball resulted in a bye to give Kilsyth victory in a very entertaining and closely fought match, which was well played by both teams. For Kilsyth, Will Beard took 3/21 off 3 overs, Andy Solomons 2/33, and Luke Ivanovic 1/34, both off 4 overs.
