🎬 Last call for the CAWA Film Festival 2026!

Submissions close 15 October, so if you have been sitting on footage from a big trip, a personal project or a moment that captures what climbing in WA is really about, now is the time to finish it and send it in.

Screening night is 12 November at Luna Leederville, and we want the big screen packed with original, homegrown stories this year. New angles, new adventures, new voices, whatever you have been dreaming up, this is your excuse to actually make it.

🏆 Prizes up for grabs: the $500 CAWA Film Award, People's Choice prizes of $300 and $150, plus a share of ticket sales if your film is selected for screening.

You do not need a big budget or a film degree, just a story worth telling. Get creating, get inspired, and get it in before time runs out.

Australia has a new hardest grade.

Congratulations to Alexander Megos on the first ascent of Slice of Heaven (37, 9b) at Cheesedale near Nowra, NSW. It's the first 37 in the country, and Megos called it one of the best routes he's ever done.

Massive effort and a big moment for Australian climbing.

🎃 12 HOURS OF QUARRY MADNESS is BACK, and this time it's SPOOKY EDITION 🎃

Mark it down, climbers. Saturday 31 October we're taking over Mountain Quarry for a full 12 hours of climbing, costumes, and community chaos.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the first ascent of one of WA's most iconic climbing routes: 'Kalbarri Gold' (26). This mega-classic route was first climbed by Victorian climbing legend Malcolm Matheson in September 1996 after he received a tip-off from local WA climbers. Malcolm recalls aid-climbing the route first for a close inspection and to clean loose rock. He then free-climbed the route on his first attempt which is captured in these photos. This is an exceptional achievement which is perhaps only fully appreciated by those who have attempted the route. This single pitch, trad route leads up to and follows an imposing, 7m roof-splitting crack, followed by an awkward crux to gain the headwall. Malcolm Matheson is one of Australia's best all-time climbers who has and continues to establish and repeat many of Australia's best climbing routes. Escape the city this King’s Birthday long weekend for one of WA’s great multi-pitch missions.

📅 25 to 28 September
📍 Peak Charles, Great Western Woodlands
🏕️ Free camping, first come first served, bush toilets only, no freshwater on site

Classics range from Badile (11) and the 500m A Walk In The Park (13) through to Juluka (18) and Beckoning Horizon (19), with a handful of harder sport lines like Double Scorpion (23) and Mr Pharmacist (24) for those chasing something steeper.

Peak Charles is remote and the climbing is predominantly adventurous trad, so it’s worth checking the event page for the full rundown on what skills and gear you’ll need before you head out.
