A reminder we have our 50th year celebration at Dixie Park this Saturday. Our change of date has meant we haven't been able to secure Facepainting however have Glitter Tats instead (along with the photobooth, dunk the coach and soccer darts)!

With plenty for the kids to do off the field, and plenty of action on the field, it's shaping up to be a great day!

Looking forward to seeing a big turnout of current and past members to celebrate 50 years of Port United!

💚🖤⚽Celebrating 50 Years - Port United finds a Home!⚽🖤💚

For the next installment of our trip down memory lane, and on the eve of our 50th Anniversary, what better way to honor the history of the club than the story of Dixie Park:

Before moving to Dixie Park, the club spent its early years at Oxley Oval, constantly battling for pitch time against cricket, rugby union, and the threat of a hockey takeover. Everything changed in 1979 when a council engineer threw the club a lifeline, sitting down with them to offer a swampy, water-logged area of land across the road as a potential home field. Part of that land belonged to a local resident named Gordon Dick, who happily gave the boys permission to transform the space, creating a foundation so informal that the local council completely lost track of the acquisition records years later.

While the players actively debated grand traditional football names like Anfield or Ivory, the park's true identity came from a heartfelt conversation with Gordon's wife. She approached the club with two favors: to spare a beautiful Moreton Bay fig tree she and her husband had planted on their wedding day, and to name the field Dixie Park. While the tree unfortunately sat right inside the 18-yard box and had to go, the name stuck instantly because, as she beautifully explained, "Dixie means home".

Turning that swamp into a proper pitch was a legendary, two-year labor of love driven by a small tight-knit crew of founding members. Working hard during any available downtime, they cleared out thick tea trees with a front-end loader borrowed from Pioneer Concrete next door, followed by scrapers and graders to level out the earth. The concrete company supplied free materials that the players formed up themselves, while building supplies were passed along by a member's father and families pitched in to paint the perimeter fences.

Once the pitch was finally seeded, maintaining it became a proud community ritual. Club members regularly spent their evenings after work or training, mowing with a parade of push mowers, watering the grass and sharing a few beers together. Entire families helped out—players, wives, girlfriends, and kids—joined in on dedicated "emu parades" to meticulously walk the field and clear out rocks and sticks. They even scavenged a forgotten ride-on mower from the southwestern corner of the grounds, leveraging a member's mechanical genius to fix it up and keep the grass pristine. Built from pure grit, sweat, and mateship, Dixie Park truly became the home it was always meant to be.

💚🖤⚽Celebrating 50 Years of Port United⚽🖤💚

We have a new date!

We invite all current and past Port United members to join us at Dixie Park on Saturday 27th June to celebrate our 50th Anniversary.

There will be plenty of action on the park with all of our Senior teams in action. Our ladies A grade team kick off the action at 11.40am followed by Mens Devils at 1.20pm, Zone League 2 at 3pm, First Grade (ZL1) at 5pm and Mens Dragons at 7pm.

We are keen to see as many kids as possible down at the park decked out in their green and white, and have plenty for them to do with facepainting, photobooth, soccer darts, dunk the coach (sorry coaches) and plenty of giveaways - all totally free.

And of course, plenty of treats to keep them going all afternoon with Go Nutz Donuts and Dippin Dots Ice Cream.

In our clubhouse you’ll be able to take a trip down memory lane with an assortment of photo’s, newspaper clippings and playing strips to take in.

Fully licenced catering will be provided by Make a Difference Foundation, so you’ll be able to grab a bite to eat and a drink or two, maybe 3 for some!

It’s shaping up as a great day and a fantastic opportunity for our oldest of members to come together with our newest of members to celebrate 50 years of Port United soccer and launch us into the next 50!
