Cooper’s Ocean Therapy Journey: From First Steps Into the Ocean to Riding Waves with Confidence

Three years ago, when Cooper first joined our Ocean Therapy program, our very first goal was simple – helping him feel comfortable entering the ocean and adapting to a new environment.
Cooper always loved the water, but the ocean brought challenges and uncertainty. With patience, encouragement, support from his family, and plenty of determination from Cooper himself, that first goal was achieved.

Along the way, Cooper showed incredible courage. We began at Town Beach, and eventually he built the confidence to surf at different beach locations – a huge achievement in itself. Throughout his journey, Cooper has also developed a wide range of skills, including improvements in core strength, balance, coordination, fine motor skills, and his ability to remain engaged in activities for longer periods of time.

Next came standing on the board. Then learning to trust the wave. With support from Huddo in a safe and encouraging environment, Cooper gradually developed the confidence to let the wave carry him towards the shore.
Today, Cooper is riding waves with growing independence and confidence.
To many people, it might look like “just surfing”, but for Cooper and his family, this journey represents years of hard work, resilience, confidence building, skill development, and personal growth.

Watching Cooper progress from his very first lesson to riding waves has been nothing short of incredible, and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of his journey.

Our Ocean Therapy program is designed to support people of all ages living with autism, ADHD & anxiety through personalised goals, skill development, confidence building, and meaningful experiences in the ocean environment. Every participant’s journey is unique, and Cooper’s story is a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved with the right support, consistency, and belief.

After School Surfing starts this week!

Just a reminder to families — if you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time to jump online and secure your spot. Whether your child has surfed before or it’s their very first session, everyone is welcome

Autumn is actually one of the best times of year to be surfing — clean offshore conditions, fun waves, and the water is still warm. Cooler mornings, but prime time in the ocean.

There’s no better way to finish the school day than getting active, building confidence, and having fun with mates in the surf.

Lest We Forget

Surf comps, surf talk, surf language, judging discussions this world has been part of Ollie’s life for as long as he can remember.

Growing up in a surfing family and with our family running a surf school, Ollie has been surrounded by the sport every day.
From the age of 12 he’s been helping out in our family business, soaking up the knowledge, conversations and passion that come with coaching, competing and living the surfing lifestyle.

Surfing is truly in the family genes, and Ollie has grown up immersed in it all — from the competitive side of the sport to coaching and learning the art of judging.

Over the years he has followed these pathways with genuine passion, and being invited to judge the Challenger Series trials is the next exciting step forward on that journey.

We’re incredibly proud of our coach Ollie for being invited to judge the Challenger Series trials, gaining valuable experience and taking another step forward on his judging pathway. Working alongside and learning within the environment of the World Surf League is an amazing opportunity as he continues to chase his dream of one day travelling the world judging WSL events.

We feel so lucky to have Ollie as one of our coaches. His stoke for surfing, knowledge of competition surfing, and recent experience within the industry is something he generously shares with all our surfers from beginners catching their first waves right through to our high-performance groms preparing for competition.

Our crew are pretty lucky to have a coach who lives and breathes the sport and is walking the pathway himself.

AFTER SCHOOL SURFING

Our After School Surfing Program is underway for term 1 and we’re having an epic time in the water! The kids are learning how to ride waves, build confidence in the ocean, making new new friends and becoming more ocean-aware and surf savvy.

We’ve just updated our online booking system with a few new spots available — so if you’re keen, you can still join us this term

If you are visiting Flynn’s in the holiday make sure you keep an eye out for these sea hares.

There has been heaps of them swimming around and hanging in the seaweed, with tiny babies all the way to full grown adults.
