MVC Boxing Diary’s

Simon Vistarini

This week I renewed our family membership which marked 2 years of us being part of the MVC community; my wife first joined in July 2024. Steve asked me if I’d share my story, and I agreed on the chance it will motivate someone else.

Earlier that year I celebrated my 40th birthday. I had let myself go over the prior 5 years, and when I looked in the mirror I knew I needed to make healthier decisions. I was horribly unfit, out of shape, always tired and lacking energy. But it ran deeper than that. I was >120kg, I had high cholesterol, fatty liver condition, high blood pressure (taking a daily tablet) and was having regular gout pain in my feet (another daily tablet). A sleep test revealed I had severe sleep apnea, so I’d started using a CPAP.

After some encouragement from my wife and a close friend, I walked into MVC for the first time in late 2024.

What I found was an environment not typical of most gyms. The people here made me feel welcome, despite my low fitness level. Trainers and gym-goers alike who encourage each other, no egos and no show-offs. Good people who demonstrate the value of connection, persistence and having fun along the way.

I made a commitment to myself to stick with it for a year, and to show up even when I couldn’t be bothered. Knowing it would take a while, I was ok with steady gains and small wins.

I did 2-3 sessions every week, forcing myself out of bed at 5am. I started making better food and alcohol choices. Not a crash-diet or fad (I still love a beer!) and not trying to do it too quickly.

Here we are 18 months later and it’s been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life. I’ve lost more than 20kg on the scales, and I’m fitter and stronger than I’ve ever been. I have so much more energy and I jump out of bed every day now.

Health wise; my blood pressure, cholesterol and liver enzymes are now all back in normal healthy ranges. No more gout, no more daily tablets and no more sleep apnea; I recently sold my CPAP!

It was hard, both physically and mentally, but that only makes it more satisfying. The hard work was for my family, for my kids, and for me.

I’m thankful for the culture and people at MVC, which made me very comfortable to be myself and go at my own pace. I’m particularly grateful to the amazing trainers who have spent time with me and kept pushing me; Jeff, Linda, Sue, Brodie and Steve (amongst other legends).

If my story resonates with you, come down to MVC and join us!

Thirty Years Later. 🥊🇦🇺🇨🇳

The power of Boxing stretches beyond borders, languages and generations.

Boxing takes you places you never imagined.

More than thirty years ago, Liu Gang walked into the original Ringwood Boxing Club at Bedford Park Hall, a little Dungeon beneath the stage.

He had come from China chasing a Dream.

We trained together for years. Hundreds of rounds.
Thousands of punches. Memories forged inside those ropes.

In 1996, we both made our professional debuts on the Lester Ellis vs Calvin Grove card at Melbourne’s Glasshouse.

Calvin used Ringwood as his training base, arriving with legendary Philadelphia fighter and trainer Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts. Liu, myself and the Ringwood boys were fortunate to spar the former World Champion throughout his preparation.

Those rounds were priceless.

They showed us the Standard.

That night at the Glasshouse, I Boxed Darren Miller.
Liu fought Lance Hobson in the bout before mine.

Tragically, Lance collapsed during the fight and later passed away.

It remains one of Australian Boxing’s darkest nights, a reminder that beneath the lights and roar of the crowd, every fighter places something real on the line.

Life carried Liu and me in different directions, but Boxing remained at the centre of both our lives.

I stayed in Australia and built what became MVC Boxing.

Liu returned to China, founded Max Power Promotions and helped pioneer professional Boxing there. He guided Xiong Chaozhong to become China’s first male professional World Champion and later developed WBA World Champion Xu Can.

Years later, Liu brought his fighters back to Melbourne to train with us at MVC.

Now, more than thirty years after our journey began beneath that stage, Liu stands beside me once again.
Not as one of China’s most respected promoters.

Just as an old mate dropping in to say ,

G’day 好久不见.

That is the Power of Boxing.

It crosses Oceans, bridges Cultures and creates friendships that time and distance cannot break.

The Titles become History.
The bright lights fade.
The crowds move on.

But friendships forged through hard rounds.

Last Forever.

Welcome back, Liu

Weight Made. History Everywhere. 🥊

Tonight, Zoe made weight and Tomorrow she climbs through the ropes at The Grandeur on Clyde, ready to shine.

At the weigh-in, we bumped into our dear old mate Stuart Patterson. Former Australian Champion, OPBF contender and a true warrior from the Bedford Hall days.

And there he was, proudly wearing the original retro, Ringwood Boxing club shirt from the 1980s.

The original Koala logo.
Decades of memories.

The years move on, but the friendships, stories and fighting spirit remain.

Tonight, Stuart wore history.

Tomorrow, Zoe carries the Future.
