A great piece I foundโ€ฆ. So good.

Days after losing in the 2010 French Open, Novak Djokovic told his coach, Mariรกn Vajda, that he decided to quit playing tennis.

He was No. 3 in the world, a grand slam winner, and a favorite to win Wimbledon.

Vajda asked,

โ€œWhy did you start playing this sport?โ€

He immediately sensed the problem:

Djokovic was focusing on rankings, titles, & external expectations. As a result, Djokovic said, โ€œI was mentally at one very messed up place.โ€

As Djokovic thought about Vajdaโ€™s question, he realized: many of his childhood memories include his โ€œmost beloved toyโ€โ€”a mini tennis racket and a soft foam ball.

He started playing, answering Vajdaโ€™s question, โ€œbecause I just loved holding that racket in my hand.โ€

โ€œDo you still love holding a racket in your hand?โ€ Vajda asked.

Djokovic thought about it, got excited, and said:

โ€œI do. I still love holding a racket in my hand. Whether itโ€™s a grand slam final on center court or just playing around on a public court, I like playing for the sake of playing.โ€

Vajda nodded, โ€œThatโ€™s your source. That's what you need to tap into. Put aside rankings, what you want to achieve, & what you think others are expecting of you.โ€

Djokovic agreed that he would.

โ€œAnd I never looked back ever since that moment.โ€

The following season, Djokovic enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in sports history. He won 43 straight matches, including his first Wimbledon title. And he finished the year as the No. 1 player in the world.

โ€œI started to play freely,โ€ he says. โ€œI became the kid that I was when I started playing.โ€

Takeaway 1:

There's a word for being like a kid who does something for the sake of doing it:

Autotelic.

From the Greek auto (self) & telos (end)โ€”an Autotelic is "someone that has a purpose in, and not apart from, itself."

As opposed to someone who focuses on rankings, titles, and external expectationsโ€”for an Autotelic...

โ€The work is the win,โ€ as Ryan Holiday once told me.

โ€œYou have to get to a place where doing the work is the win and everything else is extra.โ€

Takeaway 2:

When reading about Autotelicsโ€”people who simply seem to love what they doโ€”a mistake is to think that itโ€™s all bliss all the time.

One of my favorite Autotelics is the legendary skateboarder Rodney Mullen.

โ€œThere are days,โ€ Rodney said, โ€œwhere you donโ€™t want to go out. Or it hurts. Or you just suckโ€”you're not making progress, and you feel defeated...But that's the nature of loveโ€”it's got hate in there, it's got pain in there. And thatโ€™s what draws you in, that's the magnetism.โ€

During the recent Wimbledon final, Djokovic angrily smashed and shattered his racket. And after losing the match, he admitted it will take him a while to get over the loss.

Thatโ€™s the nature of loveโ€”itโ€™s got hate in there, itโ€™s got pain in there.

โ€œI see people with talent, with all those things, but the one thing they don't have is just that love for doing it for the sake of it.โ€ โ€” Rodney Mullen

Last Friday night was unbelievable!! We had the cones out for serve targets. One boy hit the cone and within a few seconds another boy hit a ball in the knocked over cones. We all couldn't stop laughing. What fun times sport can bring out with friends
