I really don’t think yoga gets enough credit for how much strength it actually requires. Hold a Warrior III, move slowly through a Chaturanga, or stay controlled through a challenging transition and you’ll feel pretty quickly that your muscles are doing more than just “stretching.”

But does that mean yoga can actually make you stronger? And if it can, could it ever replace traditional strength training?

This week’s blog looks at the research behind yoga and strength, why bodyweight resistance still counts as resistance, and where yoga starts to fall short if building strength is your main goal. I also break down why I think the two work so well together rather than treating them like completely separate forms of exercise.

I think one of the biggest shifts that happens when you strength train long enough is realizing your body is so much more than something to look at.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good or having physique goals. I still have them too. But being able to lift something heavy, hike for hours, play a sport, try something new, or simply trust that your body can handle what you ask of it starts to matter a whole lot more.

Looking strong is great. Feeling capable is better. 💪

Muscle is…well…EVERYTHING.

I know that sounds dramatic…but honestly…it is.

And I think we do value muscle…but not to the extent we should. We still get so caught up in that darn scale and seeing it go down.

But muscle helps us look, feel and move our best until our final day on this planet.

It changes how your metabolism works…helping your body handle fuel instead of storing it.

It changes how you AGE…protecting your bones, your strength, your ability to stay independent for decades.

It changes how capable you feel in everything you do…carrying the groceries in one trip, catching yourself before a fall, keeping up without your body holding you back.

And here's the part that makes it urgent to appreciate NOW…after 40, you're losing muscle every single year unless you actively work to build and keep it.

So this isn't vanity. It's not a "someday" goal.

Build it like your life depends on it.

Because in a lot of ways…it does. 💪

The physical changes have never been the biggest thing fitness gave me.

I don’t talk about my childhood very often, but it was a really tough one. I learned pretty young how to be strong, how to keep going and how to become the version of myself I felt like I needed to be to get through things. For a long time, I don’t think I even realized that was what I was doing.

Sports became one of the places I could just be a kid. They gave me structure, people to be around, somewhere I felt safe and something to look forward to. As I got older, the gym became that place too. When other parts of life felt uncertain, training was predictable. I could show up, put the work in and know that effort would eventually turn into progress.

Looking back now, I realize fitness gave me an outlet long before I had the words to explain why I needed one. It built confidence, discipline and resilience, but more than anything, it gave me somewhere to put everything I was carrying.

Of course I still have physique goals. I like feeling strong and I like seeing progress. But after all these years, I know the person I became along the way will always mean more to me than anything fitness has changed physically. ❤️

Sometimes the real transformation has very little to do with what you see in the mirror.

Happy Sunday!

Progressive overload is one of the most talked-about principles in strength training, but how much does it actually matter for building muscle?

A new study put it to the test, and the results give us a really interesting look at what happens when training progressively gets harder compared to when it doesn’t...

A new 2026 study put progressive overload to the test. Learn what researchers found about muscle growth and how to apply the results to your own strength training.

It’s impossible to be bored when you have goals to make progress on, business ideas to execute, a body to take care of, a mind to keep sharp, and a home to fill with love. Keep going.

It’s really easy to decide what we’re capable of before we’ve even given ourselves a chance to find out. 💭

Looking back at some of these older videos is kind of funny because when I first became a trainer, I really had no idea where it was going to take me. More than 10 years later, I’ve built my own business, worked with hundreds of people, taught, created, learned a ridiculous amount and done things I definitely wouldn’t have pictured for myself back then. 💪 And there have been plenty of moments along the way when I questioned whether I was capable of the next thing.

I see the same thing happen in fitness all the time. “I’m too old for that.” “I’m not strong enough.” “I could never lift that.” “I’ve never been athletic.” Sometimes the biggest thing holding us back isn’t our ability, it’s that we’ve already decided what we can and can’t do.

✨ So the next time you catch yourself saying “I can’t do that,” try changing the question: What would I need to work on to be able to do that? Maybe you need more strength, better mobility, an easier starting point or simply more time to practice. That gives you somewhere to go instead of taking yourself out of the game before you’ve even started.

You don’t need to know exactly where something will lead. Sometimes you just have to give yourself the chance to find out. ❤️

What’s something you’ve been telling yourself you “can’t” do? 👇
