Christina Lake Golf Club update. In order to minimize disruption to play for the members and guests, the strategy was to break down the irrigation system installation project into two phases - which worked great for the first nine holes which was completed in 2018.
Phase 1. (Fall 2026) Install the large diameter HDPE main line pipe system (10” thru 4”), isolation valves, control system power cable & satellite field controllers and the road crossing to connect to the existing 10” service (installed in 2018).
Phase 2. (Spring 2027) Install the remaining irrigation system components including the new sprinklers heads, small diameter HDPE pipe system and control system wiring for the greens, tees and fairways (tree line to tree line).
This week Olson Beatty Golf (the irrigation contractor) completed Phase 1 of the project in just five weeks which was remarkable. They installed 14,600 ft of large diameter HDPE pipe, 52 isolation gate valves, 9,300 ft of control system power cable, and the satellite field controllers along with the 10” road crossing as shown. The new piping was then flushed and pressure tested with zero leaks.
Every effort is made to minimize the damage to the turf on the golf course during construction, which helps to keep the restoration costs down. This means routing the main line pipe in the rough along the edges of the tree lined fairways or in some cases through the trees where possible. This also keeps the isolation valves in safe locations for the maintenance staff.
However, the team is careful to not destabilize the large pine trees by severing the root system. The exposed turf areas are backfilled, compacted and cleaned up - and left to settle over the winter months to be sodded or seeded in the spring.
Play continued throughout the installation process with minimal disruption - which certainly helps with course income and member enjoyment. Travis (the golf course superintendent) and his staff were very accommodating working with the team for a positive outcome.
We are looking forward to completing the Christina Lake irrigation project in the spring.
