The Larry E. Peppler event began in 1980 as a memorial to Mr. Peppler who passed away on January 31st of that year.

Mr. Peppler was the president of the KW Skating Club and was the Chairperson of the 1980 Canadian Figure Skating Championships that were held in Kitchener. He passed away of a heart attack at age 39 on the closing evening of the event. He left behind his wife, a son and 2 daughters who were skaters.

Mr. Peppler worked side by side with Mr. Kerry Leitch to establish a summer skating school program for the Preston and KW skaters which ran out of the Kitchener Auditorium and later moved to Conestoga College. His passion for the sport ran deep and he was a strong leader in the Western Ontario Section.

Mr. Peppler was a big believer in what our training centre is built on, Team Coaching. Together with Mr. Leitch, they championed this concept. After his passing, Preston and KW no longer shared their summer ice and Preston continued on with the team coaching concept that is still a part of Champions Training Centre.

When the event first started, it was a school figure competition. When figures were no longer a part of the sport it became a free skating team and fun event.

The event is run by the skaters for the skaters.

Team events showcase a team spirit unique to our very individualized sport. In recent years the event still runs fun events like the longest sit glide, most consecutive axels, a hula hoop challenge and the Team Event, but has changed from a freeskate competition to an opportunity for our skaters to perform clear ice simulations in front of an audience, coaches, technical specialists and judges, getting feedback before beginning their competitive season.

A huge thank you to the Peppler girls!!! Once again, we are so grateful for your ongoing support of this very special event.
