Protect the habit, not the schedule.
A good reminder at this time of year, when lots of people’s schedules are busy or changing!
Life gets busy. Plans change. Seasons change. And suddenly the routine you’ve built needs to shift.
When this happens, don’t let your habits fall away!
Sure, maybe an hour to meal prep, or weight lift, or keep up your personal yoga practice is preferred. But you might not have that time right now. And maybe you’d prefer to do those things at a certain time, or on a certain day, but that might not be possible right now. Instead can you find 20 minutes in your day? Maybe not when you would usually have time for that task, but 20 minutes before bed, when you first wake up, over your lunch.
20 minutes of intention still matters.
When something is important, we sometimes have to change how we do it, without letting go of why we do it. If you’re feeling busy right now and wondering how you’re going to make time for something, reflect on why you’re doing it in the first place and evaluate- is this something I want to make time for?
Does this habit help me sleep? Make me feel more grounded? Make me feel more confident? Keep me focused? Improve how I treat myself and others in my life? If the answer is yes - protect that habit.
• Write down one thought instead of a full journal entry.
• Walk for 15 minutes or while you’re taking a call!
• Do a few sets of one exercise if you don’t have time for your full strength session.
• Prepare one meal for the week.
• Attend a class, so all you have to do is show up.
Adjust. Reduce. Move things around. Start again.
Protect the habit, not the schedule.
Consistency doesn’t always mean doing the same thing every day. Sometimes, consistency is adapting and finding ways to keep doing the things that are important to you.
