Our junior athletes spent the day removing and installing fencing as part of their fundraising efforts to help get them to Spain. Every post pulled, every panel installed, and every hour of work brings them one step closer to representing Canada on the international stage.

We’re so proud of their dedication both on and off the mats. Thank you to everyone who continues to support these amazing athletes, it truly makes a difference.

World Cup athletes take a look and comment

This is me at my first ever World Cup. 2008. Eighteen years ago.

I made it onto the centre stage not for a final (I lost 1st round) but for this photo on an old camera phone (likely a Nokia) —

I lost my first fight. Same as the Euros the year before. Same as my first Worlds. Same as the Euros a few months before this photo was taken. Four international events, four first-round exits.

Here's what I didn't understand back then: I had no idea how far off the level I actually was. I thought I was doing everything right. Training hard, showing up, giving it everything.

And I was — effort was never my problem.

I was just working hard at the wrong things. And I didn't know any different.

Then that changed. I got some guidance on what actually moved the needle at that level — how to compete, not just turn up and try. It wasn't more effort. It was better direction and personalised feedback. Exactly what I needed to do.

Two years later I won the European Championships individually.

Same person. Same work rate. Completely different result. The only thing that changed was that I finally knew what I was meant to be doing to be successful.

The World Cup comes around again at the end of the year in Benidorm.

And every time it does, I think about the kid in this photo — trying his heart out, with no clue what he didn't know.

This year, I want to help someone who's standing exactly where I was or maybe even a bit ahead of this point.
