Your jaw keeps clicking. But has anyone ever assessed your tongue? 👅
When we assess TMJ concerns, we’re not only interested in where you feel tension.
Jaw opening and closing, tongue mobility and function, the muscles under the jaw, and swallowing mechanics can provide additional information about how the system is working as a whole.
And sometimes, having a lot of jaw mobility isn’t necessarily the same thing as having good jaw function.
If you’ve been searching for TMJ treatment in Victoria because the same jaw pain, clicking or tension keeps coming back, it may be worth taking a more comprehensive look.
Dr. Alix Boyer offers TMJ-focused assessments and treatment at Recoup Health & Performance in Victoria, BC. Book through the link in our bio.

These findings don’t automatically mean you have a tongue tie, swallowing disorder, or TMJ disorder. Tongue mobility, tongue function, swallowing mechanics and the muscles of the floor of the mouth are related but distinct things that should be assessed individually.
In my practice, I frequently see significant upper-trapezius tension and jaw clicking in patients who also have tongue restriction. That’s a clinical observation, not a diagnostic rule — but it’s one pattern that prompts me to take a closer look at tongue mobility and function.
If you’re having new or unexplained difficulty swallowing, choking, food getting stuck, or other significant swallowing changes, those symptoms warrant appropriate medical assessment.
