Elsie: I have competed endurance in 3 countries: Canada, the USA and Chili
Christine: I bought Rainer as a 10 year old rescue horse and she's made an incredible endurance partner as well as giving some lessons!
Kara: Me and Malika ended up a cobbled together team after my horse and her rider were both sidelined last year. I would say its working out pretty well for us!
Annette: Born and Raised in NL ... Still a newfie at heart but love the prairies!

The Distance Riders of Manitoba (DRM) Assoc. Inc. was formed in 1992 to promote the growing sport of endurance riding in Manitoba.
DRM operates under the umbrella of the Manitoba Horse Council and the Endurance Canada It has been called the "natural sport for horses", and is growing in popularity across the globe. Endurance riding is one of only seven recognized International Equestrian Federation (FEI) events and is anticipated as a future Olympic sport. We asked our 2 nationals teams to tell us a fun fact about them or their equine. Here is what our 50 mile (80km) riders had to say:
Emily: Emily just started riding late in 2025 with her bestie Elsie, so we hatched a crazy plan to bring her to nationals, she went from no riding at all to 50s.
Elsie: Elsie made jam and jellies, and picked wild fruit to raise money to buy her horses.
Christine: When I'm not endurance riding you might find me eventing, running, or doing something crazy like learning how to ride broncs.
Brendan: I dabbled in endurance during a leave from my job as a medic. At the time I figured it would be a good distraction, and had no idea it would quickly take over and become such a major part of my life. Now I can't imagine life without a good horse and a decent trail.
Floriane: I went from riding 10 miles intos for pleasure with rescue ponies who were feral less than a year ago to a 50 mile which was decided at 3hours before the ride. I'm smooth sailing and enjoy whichever equine enjoys the sport.

The selected squad heading to Lily Plain SK for August 7 to 9 2026 for the 2026 Canadian Endurance Championship will need a Chef D’Equipe. Are you interested in filling this important role?

DRM will provide an honorarium to assist with travel expenses.
The main job of the chef d’equipe is to handle as much as possible, so the athletes can focus on performance. They will serve as the spokesperson for the team, develop strategies and handle team logistics. The chef d’equipe will be responsible for the final determination of which riders make up the team and who will serve as alternate based on their presentation at ride camp and before vet-in.
Qualifications for the Chef D’Equipe:
- Must be a member of Distance Riders of Manitoba
- Experience in the discipline of endurance riding
- Familiarity with EC Endurance rules and procedures (no EC membership is required and specific rules can be studied prior to the event).
- Ability to handle pressure with grace and sound judgement.
- Good communication, negotiation, and mentoring skills
- Good organization and record keeping
- No conflicts of interest.
- Must be able to be at the competition site for the Chef D’equipe meeting at 11 am on Friday August 7th, as crewing sites will be chosen by the chef d’equipe by lottery at that time and vet-in times given.

**Amendment**
The Distance Riders of Manitoba will be selecting teams to represent Manitoba at the 2026 Canadian Endurance Championship in Lily Plain, SK on August 8-9 2026.
As we did not get the selection criteria out in a timely matter, we will allow 2 ride cards for the 80 km distance only as long as both rider and horse meet the lifetime endurance mileage (no LDs count) and other qualifications as listed by the Canadian Nationals Qualification criteria found here: https://sasklongriders.ca/2026-canadian-endurance-championship-2/2026-canadian-endurance-championship-qualification-criteria/
Due to this amendment, the selection committee will accept applications until 9 am tomorrow (July 10th).
We are hoping to field teams for both the 80 km and the 160 km distances. Each team will be 4 members plus 1 alternate and may be composed of both junior and senior riders. Selected members may be eligible for funding from DRM.

80 km team:
Expression of interest
Two ride cards from events of at least 50 miles (80km) since Jan 1, 2023 meeting the following criteria:
Showing at least one completion of an EC sanctioned competition of at least 80 km between Jan 1 2023 and current date for both the rider and the horse. These can be separate events, but we will need 2 ride cards for each of the horse and rider.
Proof of a lifetime accumulation of 240 km (150 miles) in endurance (no LDs) for both horse and rider.
160 km team:
Expression of interest
Three ride cards from events of at least 50 miles (80 km) since Jan 1, 2023 meeting the following criteria:
Showing at least two completions of an EC sanctioned competition of at least 80 km between Jan 1 2023 and current date for both the rider and horse.
In addition, the completion of a one day 120 km (75 miles) or 160 km (100 miles) event for both rider and horse. Equines can be qualified in separate events than the rider, but we will need 3 rides cards for each of the rider and horse.
Proof of a lifetime accumulation of 360 km (225 miles) in endurance (no LDs) for both horse and rider.
Additional considerations:
Riders are advised they need a bronze level EC license and the horse must meet vaccine and coggins requirements. The selection committee does not need proof of these things, but they will need to be produced prior to registration.
You may enter with more than one horse, please include 2-3 ride cards (depending on the distance requirements) for each horse, we will only put you on the team with one equine (the one who scores best).
Please indicate if as a horse/rider combination you are applying for the 160 km team, you would like to be considered for the 80 km team in the event you do not make the cut. This can include if you are placed as alternate.
Please advise if you are planning to ride both the 160 km and 80 km events or are applying to both but only wish to ride one.
DRM Nationals Selection Committee is issuing an amendment to the team selection criteria, only the equestrian Canada sanctioned competition(s) have to be since Jan 1, 2023. The rest of the required mileage is life time mileage. This amendment is to align with the qualification criteria of the most recent amendment in October of 2025. Due to this change the committee is extending the deadline until 9am July 9th

Want to be a part of nationals but don't have a horse, or your body can't keep up with your ambitions any longer? DRM will very shortly be putting out a call for a Chef d'Equipe to assist our nationals teams!
The role of the Chef d'Equipe is to help serve as a liaison between the team and ride officials, assist with coordinating riders and crew on race day. They also play a big role in assisting with communication, problem-solving, and ensuring compliance with rules and procedures.
Most importantly the Chef d'Equipe needs to be kind, reassuring, calm in the storm personality who is organized and communicates well. If you think this might be you keep an eye here as we will be looking to fill this position for Nationals August 7&8, 2026!
