Exercise causes microscopic tears in muscle fibers. Resting gives your body the necessary time to repair these fibers, which allows them to grow back stronger and larger. Pushing your body without adequate rest taxes your nervous system and stresses joints, which increases the likelihood of strains and sprains. Recovery prevents the buildup of chronic stress and reduces acute injury risk.
