In this frank, revealing and deeply personal memoir, former hunger striker Laurence McKeown leads us through the development of this new form of prison struggle in the face of internal challenges from both left and right. The new resistance contains important lessons for anyone in struggle and also helps us understand how easily republican prisoners adapted and applied themselves to the unfolding peace process years later, when all political prisoners were released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and the prison finally closed.

Kieran Nugent - The First Blanket Man

In September 1976, nineteen-year-old Kieran Nugent from the Falls Road was the first republican to be sentenced under the new British prison regime aimed at criminalising the struggle for Irish independence.

They stripped him and beat him and tried to force him to wear a criminal uniform. Kieran defiantly refused, saying, "You'll have to nail it to my back" beginning the blanket protest that changed the course of Irish history.

The book written by Danny Morrison tells the incredible story of Kieran Nugent and the blanket protest.

In September 1976, nineteen-year-old Kieran Nugent from the Falls Road was the first republican to be sentenced under the new British prison regime aimed at criminalising the struggle for Irish independence. He faced a daunting task—how to react in the face of violent warders under orders to break him. They stripped him and beat him and tried to force him to wear a criminal uniform, accept a number in place of his name, and address them as ‘Sir’. Nugent defiantly refused. Alone, he began the protest that went on to captivate the world in the 1981 hunger strike. Kieran Nugent began the blanket protest.

The SS A1 Rawdah: Internment and the Special Powers Act in the north of Ireland, 1938-1941

Since the formation of the Northern Irish State, the Unionist government has used modified ships as makeshift jails. This book is about the second prison ship used by the Unionist Goverment, Al Rawdah, shines a light on a lesser-known period in Irish history, providing detailed patterns of arrest, detention and internment without trial using the Cival Authorities Special Powers Act, between December 1938 and August 1940. It gives concise details of each of the 207 Internees who were held in the Al Rawdah in Strangford Lough beginning 2nd September 1940 and ending on 13th February 1941.

The Bloodied Field : Croke Park. Sunday 21 November 1920

On the morning of 21 November 1920, Jane Boyle walked to Sunday Mass in the church where she would be married five days later. That afternoon she went with her fiance to watch Tipperary and Dublin play a Gaelic football match at Croke Park. Across the city fourteen men lay dead in their beds after a synchronised IRA attack designed to cripple British intelligence services in Ireland.

Trucks of police and military rumbled through the city streets as hundreds of people clamoured at the metal gates of Dublin Castle seeking refuge. Some of them were headed for Croke Park. Award-winning journalist and author Michael Foley recounts the extraordinary story of Bloody Sunday in Croke Park and the 90 seconds of shooting that changed Ireland forever.
