Saturday saw us make the short trip up to Broadstreet for a very, very wet afternoon of rugby!
We knew Broadstreet would be a big, physical side, and they certainly lived up to that expectation. They also had some quality backs who moved the ball well, but the weather played a huge part in how the game unfolded.
With a strong wind against us in the first half, we had to dig deep. At times, we got drawn into too much of an arm wrestle with their big, physical forwards, but our pack stuck at it and fronted up when it mattered.
Handling errors from both sides made for a stop-start game, we went into half-time 8–0 down. Given the conditions and the wind against us, it was a deficit I genuinely felt we could claw back.
The half-time message was simple: pin them into their corners, make them work their way out of their own half, and remain solid, disciplined and organised in defence.
And that’s exactly what the lads delivered.
As the game went on, their forwards began to tire, and we started to gain the upper hand. Our boys dug deep once again, and two tries in quick succession, along with two excellent conversions, saw us turn the game around to lead 14–8!
From there, it was all about game management. Play the corners, keep them playing out of their own half, and stay disciplined and defensively sound from 1 to 15.
I thought our game management was superb. The last two games have shown just how much we’ve matured as a side. Three seasons ago, we struggled to see games out. Now, we’re learning to box clever, stay composed under pressure and get the job done when it matters most.
I’m massively proud of the boys and the resilience they showed in truly awful conditions. These are the performances that show how far we’ve come as a group.
