After 5 years of live, laugh, loving, New Line have made the tough decision to fold. It’s bittersweet coming back to do a post for New Line after a few seasons off the socials, some say the club never recovered after I left for Australia but who really knows.
Wanting to play together on a Sunday a group of mates decided why not start our own team (Rosco didn’t want to sit on the bench anymore so became his own boss).
Baz took the reins and established himself as the manager and corrupt treasurer (them books need checking).
Together Rosco and Baz gathered a squad (and Corey) and took the New Line on a whimsical journey of, let’s be honest, fu***ng great times. Even a global pandemic couldn’t stop these boys from having it. From the first game against Beldon on Rawdon Meadows to the sensational heights of Wembley, New Line made a statement quickly. Even gracing the front of the T&A, Sundays quickly became the new Saturdays and Mondays were, well, we don’t talk about Mondays. From Lane Ends and New Line to Highfield and The George, there wasn’t a pub in Idle that wasn’t ‘graced’ by the team’s Sunday presence.
Too many highlights to say and every lad played their important role on and off the pitch, sorry if you’re not named here but it’s all love.
El Capitan steadied the ship, Greek superstars were made, veterans defied retirement, career ending injuries were suffered, fists were thrown, impressive shower lengths were witnessed, the Dick of The Year award was defended consecutively, hairlines were lost and hairlines were gained, screamers were scored, howlers were conceded, trophies were won, many games were lost, children were had, mates became teammates, and teammates became family.
But the fans, the players, and the super Sundays made for an unbelievable few seasons of laughs. Too many devout supporters to name but you all know who you are (Pistol!). Yeh the footy was great and it’s a shame that it’s come to this after finally winning promotion. But life goes on and families have grown. A New Line U8’s is in the works and tbh nobody can be arsed getting spanked week in week out, when you can go play golf instead.
New Line is more than the football, it’s the people. If you’ve been on the pitch, on the side line, in the pub, on the opposition side, singing on the Wembley coach, dragging your fella home on a Sunday, in the car behind the naked mile, or a few pints deep stumbling round idle on a Sunday evening, all we can say is sorry.
But a sincere thanks for the great times, and much love to every single one of the lads for turning up come rain, snow, or shine. I’m sure once the sun comes back out these boys will get their heads out their arse and I’ll be asked to delete this post.
