🔴🟡 Clayton Rangers FC vs Salts AFC ⚫️🟢

First home game. New name. New colours. What a way to mark it.

Clayton Rangers played their first home game since the rebrand, proudly sporting our new maroon and gold colours — and what followed was an absolute thriller.

Rangers took the lead midway through the first half when Bodhi Rhodes chased down a loose ball and beat his man before finding Jack Brady, who made no mistake, calmly putting the ball past the keeper.

The visitors responded with a low-driven effort from the edge of the box after their midfielder was allowed to carry the ball forward without being closed down. Kian Simsy then produced a cracking save to keep the scores level.

It was a pretty even first half, with both sides creating opportunities and plenty of battling across the pitch.

Around the midway point of the second half, a shot from outside the area looked destined for the top corner, but Kian in the Rangers goal produced an excellent save to claw it away.

From the resulting corner, Rangers fell behind as a deflected shot found its way into the net. But rather than letting their heads drop, Rangers immediately turned up the pressure.

A corner saw us hit the post before Bodhi somehow managed to hit the bar from what looked like about six yards out. 🤣

With 15 minutes remaining, Rangers really piled on the pressure and eventually got their reward.

Super-sub Jimmy Garrett converted from a corner after the ball was headed back across goal. Kian Murgatroyd’s initial effort was blocked on the line, but Jimmy was in exactly the right place to head home and make it 2-2.

And then came the moment.

With Rangers pushing relentlessly for a winner, the last kick of the game saw Kian bring down a ball from Peace following an Alfie Jex throw-in. He showed brilliant composure and skill to roll past the defender onto his weaker foot before absolutely drilling the ball into the top corner.

2-3. Absolute scenes.

So much so that Clayton Footballing Group chairman Gav Wood celebrated with such enthusiasm that he went straight through the decking on the club balcony! 😂

A superb result and a fantastic comeback from 2-1 down. Full credit to every player for continuing to fight right until the very last kick.

First home game as Clayton Rangers. First game in the new colours. And a last-gasp winner to top it off.

What a start. 🔴🟡

🟣🟠 Clayton Rangers FC vs Bradford Unity 🟢⚫️

As a wise man once said: if you don’t shoot, you don’t score.

Rangers’ return to their ancestral home of Green Top Street ended in defeat, despite a remarkably even game. Ultimately, the difference came down to one thing — finishing.

Both teams enjoyed plenty of possession throughout the first half, pushing and probing without creating a huge amount of clear-cut opportunities. However, it was Bradford Unity who struck first on around the 30-minute mark.

A long ball from midfield found their left winger, who, despite appearing clearly offside, was allowed to continue across the box before finishing with a reversed shot into the bottom corner.

HT: Rangers 0–1 Bradford Unity

The second half mirrored the first, with both sides going all out in what remained an unbelievably even contest.

Once again, though, Bradford Unity found the breakthrough. Another long ball found their striker, who travelled well before getting a shot away. A big deflection off a Rangers defender took the ball over the Rangers keeper and into the net.

Rangers 0–2 Bradford Unity

Unity then effectively sealed the win with what can only be described as a ridiculous free kick. From around 35 yards, Rangers were expecting a deep delivery into the box, but the Unity player opted to shoot instead, catching the Rangers keeper out at his near post.

Rangers 0–3 Bradford Unity

Rangers did manage to pull one back late on from a free kick just on the left-hand side of the 18-yard box, with Peace finishing well to give Rangers a deserved consolation.

FT: Rangers 1–3 Bradford Unity

Overall, a disappointing result for Rangers. A very even game produced a very uneven scoreline, with Unity taking their chances when they mattered.

Rangers need to improve quickly — because in games this tight, the difference between a good performance and three points can come down to being clinical in front of goal.

🟣🟠 Clayton Rangers FC vs Salts AFC

⏰️ 11:00
🗓️ 16th August
📍 Salts Sports

First point on the board for the new season.

A fairly even first half saw both sides battle hard, with Rangers defending well and looking dangerous going forward. Salts struggled to create any clear-cut chances, but with just two minutes remaining before the break, they took the lead.

A shot from the edge of the box was parried into the six-yard area, with Salts reacting quickest to the rebound to make it 1-0 at half time.

The second half was a completely different story, with Rangers coming out on top and creating chance after chance. Some excellent football created openings, including a great opportunity for Side Nimaga, but we couldn’t find the finish.

The pressure eventually paid off halfway through the second half when Kian found the back of the net to bring Rangers level at 1-1.

Salts pushed hard during the final 10 minutes as they looked to regain the lead, but a couple of great saves from Rangers keeper Tim Robinson kept the game level. Rangers stood firm and still managed to create a couple of chances of their own.

In the end, a hard-fought game finished all square. Plenty of positives to take from a strong second-half performance and another good showing from the lads.

One of the Salts players had to leave the pitch via a concussion substitution after a nasty bang to the head, everyone at the Clayton Footballing Group wish him a speedy recovery and send our best wishes.
