🥋 Jidokwan Taekwondo – Complete History
Meaning: Ji = Wisdom, Do = Way, Kwan = School → School of the Way of Wisdom. One of the original 9 founding kwans that created modern Taekwondo.
📅 Origins: 1946 – Chosun Yun Moo Kwan
• Founded March 1946 by Chun Sang-Sup (1920–1950), who studied Shotokan Karate in Japan under Gichin Funakoshi.
• Original name: Chosun Yun Moo Kwan – taught Kong Soo Do (Korean Karate), forms, and basic self‑defense.
• Key early leader: Dr. Yoon Kwae‑Byung (studied karate & medicine in Japan) → became chief instructor; expanded style across Korea.
• Before 1950: grew fast, branches opened nationwide; focused on traditional discipline, mental strength, and technique.
Korean War & Rebirth: 1950–1955
• 1950: War broke out; Chun Sang‑Sup went missing / presumed deceased; original school dissolved.
• Lee Chong‑Woo took leadership; renamed to Jidokwan in December 1955 → officially established the name we know today.
• Rebuilt headquarters in Seoul; became one of the most influential kwans, famous for strong technique and poomsae.
🧩 Unification Era: 1960–1973
• 1961: All kwans began merging to form a single Korean national system → Korea Tae Soo Do Association, later renamed Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA).
• Jidokwan was a core leader; many top instructors came from its ranks: Lee Seung‑Wan, Cho Hee‑Sun, Hwang Dae‑Jin, Choi Young‑Ryul.
• 1973: Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) founded; Jidokwan adopted its standard curriculum, poomsae (Taegeuk/Palgwe), and black belt certification → became official style within World Taekwondo.
🌍 International Growth
• 1960s–70s: Masters like Choi Bong‑Young brought Jidokwan to the USA; spread across Europe, Southeast Asia, South America., Sung Soo Lee United Kingdom and Australia.
• World Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation formed → preserves original traditions while following Kukkiwon rules.
• Today: active worldwide, keeps strong identity: “Wisdom, Discipline, Tradition”.
✅ Core Identity
• Philosophy: Wisdom + Right Action + Strength – not just fighting, but character building.
• Known for sharp, powerful techniques, deep forms, and high technical standards.
• Grandmaster Lee Seung‑Wan served as long‑time president; still active as a leading traditional kwan.

Jidokwan is one of the most respected traditional lineages, same era and spirit as Jun Tong Tae kwon‑Do (Grandmasters Keith E Finch) – both dedicated to preserving true, original roots vs. modern sport‑only styles.
