Baberton hosted the 88th EoS Championship this weekend.
We had a field of 54, with 51 players braving the conditions on what was otherwise a dry and perfectly decent October day for golf. Those out early certainly faced the toughest spell, with the wind at its strongest, but it remained blustery throughout, making scoring difficult for everyone.
Gusts reached around 30mph, with a steady 20mph most of the day, so mixed scoring was no surprise. Even so, a few competitors handled the conditions impressively. Lynn Thacker (S&C, Braehead) returned an excellent net 73 — the best handicap score of the day by three clear shots. A terrific effort.
The Team Championship was closely contested, with East winning the trophy by two shots from Midlothian. Congratulations to the East team of Clara Young, Jill McNicoll, Kirsten Ireland and Tina Bracken-Chalmers.
With the draw in handicap reverse order, watching the scores come in was genuinely exciting. It took until the final two tee times before anyone broke 80, and only three players managed it. Rachael Livingstone (2024 EoS Champion) shot 79 on her home course to take 3rd scratch. Jennifer Allan (S&C, Glenbervie) produced a strong defence of her 2025 title with a 75, but it was Clara Young (East, North Berwick) who claimed the 2026 Championship with a superb 72 — and a new course record.
We are extremely grateful to Baberton Golf Club and its members for hosting the event. The course has been in excellent condition all year — perhaps the best it has been — and the greens team, led by Joe, deserve huge credit for presenting it so well despite both early-season drought and recent heavy rainfall. Their skill and hard work were evident throughout.
Thanks also to the catering staff who looked after everyone all day, and to the office and pro shop teams for their support in the lead-up to the event. It was a pleasure to hold the Championship at Baberton.
