It's that time of year again!!

Today we look forward to another great fun-filled Deacon Brother Tournament as 56 gents members take to the green for the day. A day we have been enjoying since 1978....

The trophy presentations keep coming.... and it was great that we had an attendance of 46 members on the green for the last night of the competition concerned.

This time it was to award The Mackay Cup to the overall winner of our Monday Night Umbrellas competition for the season. Congratulations to Andy Logan.

We played the last two finals of matches of our Finals Week today and managed to get them all played in glorious sunshine and completed before the heavens opened.

In the Senior Pairs, John Cunningham and Willie Milne managed to hold off the challenge of Ken Yeats and Iain Hamilton, scoring well in a couple of ends towards the end of the match, which had previously been nip and tuck.

In the Ladies Rose Bowl Trophy, a singles competition only open to those who have not previously won the trophy. Unsurprisingly it was two of our newer, but very much on-form ladies facing each other. Lesley Wood, in her 4th year playing played some really good bowls, only to find that Anne-Marie Kennedy was invariably able to find at least one bowl to match her. Anne-Marie has been in great form all week, and this would prove to be her fourth win from five finals - quite an achievement so early in her bowling experience.

Its been a great week - congratulations to all the finalists.

The relief of the pressure to "be up" when you have a yard to draw the shot to win your first Championship Final.

Well done David Wood.

You know that feeling when you win your Club Championship in only your third year as a bowler?? ....me neither.

Anne-Marie Kennedy loves a celebration

There was standing room only around our green today as the huge raft of members, friends and family who came along to our main Saturday of finals were rewarded with great weather and great games of bowls.

In the Ladies Nomination Pairs, Helen Allison and Susi Tuttle once again proved how strong a pairing they are, securing a remarkable fourth win in succession against Anne Weston and Mary MacKenzie who fought valiantly.

In the Under 45's Singles, Ben Major and Stephen Wood were involved in a great tussle that went to the wire, with Ben unfortunate to narrowly miss out on conversion attempts that could have secured the title. The plaudits though go to Stephen, winning 21-19, to win the trophy donated by his uncle, and the marker on the day, Andrew Wood.

The Vice-Presidents final saw first time-finalist, Andy Logan, take on Christopher Wood, the 2022 and 2025 runner-up in this competition for gents that have never won a singles title. Perhaps it was this experience that stood Chris in good stead, as he took an early lead that he managed to maintain and increase throughout the game, to become a worthy winner.

In the President's Prize between five times winner, Ian McLelland and four times Winner, Drew Cunningham, there was always the potential for a great match. And so it proved to be, a great match with the scores never more than three shots apart throughout - the finals score deservingly 21-20 - this time in Drew's favour, allowing him to equal Ian's number of wins of the President's Prize.

The other two finals on the green were the Ladies and Gents Championships.

The ladies game between Marilyn Moore and Anne-Marie Kennedy saw some top class bowls played by both. Marilyn had already won a Singles trophy this week, and the on-form Anne-Marie was playing in the fourth of her five finals this year. After securing an early lead, the shots were largely shared thereafter and the early gap remained the difference, for the 2026 Ladies Singles Champion - Anne-Marie Kennedy.

It was a similar story in the Gents Championship final. Second time finalist, David Wood took the early lead and whilst opponent Steven Dow came back into the game strongly, David was able to produce shots that would counter Stevie's great play. A couple of great shots in what proved to be the final ends, drew or chipped the jack away to save losing high counts. After missed drive by Stevie left David lying two with a draw to secure a three required for a win. Which he did successfully - a great contest. Congratulations to 2026 Gents Champion - David Wood.

More great Finals Week bowls were seen tonight...

In the Ladies Senior Pairs, where Jean Meggatt and Anne-Marie Kennedy managed to secure a 14-8 victory over Anne Weston and Mary Mackenzie, there was a tight match and some great heads. Only the scoring in the last few ends made the difference. Congratulations to Jean, and to Anne-Marie, whose second win from three finals so far this week showed that she has been developing a trademark of her celebrations!

In the Aussie 2-4-2 Pairs, over 14 ends, only 19 shots were scored. There were some tremendous bowls played with the shot often changing hands with every bowl. Either Pair could have won and in such cases it is often that wee "rub of the green" at the right time, that makes the difference. Commiserations go to Calum Kidd and Ian McLelland, on losing out to Scott and Drew Cunningham by a single shot, 10-9. Drew and Scott retain the title and now sit as equal three times winners of the trophy, that in its first seven years being run, only three different pairs have won.
