For the second year in a row, the Blacks headed to the Bonnie Banks Football Festival, and what a fantastic day out it was again!

​A massive shoutout and a big thank you to the organisers for pulling off another brilliant, seamless event. Your hard work behind the scenes makes memories like today possible, and all these days are so important to grassroots football.

​On the pitch, the results were a mixed bag, but the boys played some brilliant football, showed great team spirit as they always do, and loved every second of being back together for some pre-season action. We had a solid squad of 12 digging deep across 5 games, and coach John and Graham smashed the lineups to get every boy on the pitch.

​Congratulations to our Ethan, Luca, Markus, and Mitchell on playing in their very first tournament with the team and well done to Party Like A King sponsored #10 Matthew Reynolds who captained us today through another tournament.

As always, we love that every single one of our boys can be relied upon to embody the values of Harmony Row everywhere we take them. We are incredibly proud of every single one of them for their sportsmanship, discipline and teamwork together ❤️

Thank you also to our opponents today Newton Rock AFC Holytown Colts 2016, Bonnyton Thistle 2016, Garnkirk Utd & Vale of Leven for some great matches today. Your boys are a credit to your clubs and we hope to play each other again in future.

🏆 Player of the Month: Luca! 🏆

​Huge congratulations to Luca, our Player of the Month for June! 🌟

​This award recognises Luca's progress over the last few months. Not only has he shown notable development on the ball, but it's been great to see his confidence grow so much - its started to shine through in every game and also in training.

​Combined with his selfless, team-first attitude and natural empathy, Luca is a perfect example of what a true teammate is.

This article from The Guardian caught my attention (see first comment).

Norway may not have found the perfect model, but its approach raises questions worth discussing.

In Norway, there are no official league tables, trophies or rankings for children under the age of 13. The philosophy is built around participation, enjoyment and giving children the freedom to develop at their own pace.

This week, Norway reached the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Brazil.

This alone doesn't prove this approach is the reason for their success or that we should all follow, but it's worth exploring.

Football development is far more complex than one policy. However, it does raise an interesting question.

Should we spend less time worrying about who wins at nine and more time thinking about how we keep children enjoying sport until they are 13, 16 and beyond?

Across many countries, a significant proportion of children stop playing organised sport during their early teenage years.

If delaying league tables, trophies and early pressure helps more children stay involved for longer, is that something worth considering? Or do competition and results need to come earlier?
