🇯🇵🏸 A fantastic week in Japan for Scotland’s para badminton players!

A huge well done to Andrew Davies and Owen following an excellent week at the Japan Para Badminton International. 👏

Andrew enjoyed a particularly impressive run in the men’s singles, reaching the quarter-finals after a superb last-16 victory over Peru’s Nilton Quispe, winning 21-15, 21-14. 💪🔥

In the quarter-finals, Andrew faced a huge challenge against world number one Vitor Tavares of Brazil. Despite the tough test, Andrew showed great determination and fought hard against one of the very best players in the world.

Tavares went on to reach the gold medal match, highlighting the quality of the opponent Andrew faced. 🥇

Reaching the quarter-finals at such a high-level international event is another important step in Andrew’s development, with plenty of positives and valuable experience to take forward.

It was also a hugely valuable week for Owen, with both players gaining important international experience and testing themselves against some of the world’s leading para badminton players. 🌍🏸

A special thank you to Para Head Coach Kirsty Flockhart for her support, guidance and commitment to the players throughout the tournament. 🙌

DOUBLE GOLD SUCCESS FOR SCOTLAND! 🥇🥇

What a week for Scotland’s top shuttlers at the YONEX Belgian International in Nieuwpoort! 🇧🇪🏸

🌟 Kirsty Gilmour claimed the women’s singles title with a superb run through the draw. After impressive wins over Sophia Noble and Heli Neiman, Kirsty battled past Germany’s Yvonne Li in a thrilling three-game semi-final before producing a dominant straight-game victory over Canada’s 3rd seed Zhang in the final. 🏆

🔥 The Grimley Twins were equally outstanding, taking the men’s doubles title without dropping a single set! An imperious week from start to finish, capped off with victory over Denmark’s Søby and Nebel in the final. 🏆

👏 There were also some excellent performances across the Scottish squad:

Matthew Waring reached the main draw after an excellent run, eventually bowing out in a tough three-game battle in the last 32.

Julie & Ciara reached the women’s doubles quarter-finals before narrowly losing a titanic three-game contest to Denmark’s Nielsen & Røjkjær.

Alex & Julie were beaten in the opening round of mixed doubles by Søby & Røjkjær, who went on to win the title.

Josh & Evan reached the last 32 of the men’s doubles before losing to the eventual runners-up.

Two gold medals, some fantastic performances and plenty of positives to take away from Nieuwpoort!

🏸 DAY THREE | JAPAN PARA BADMINTON INTERNATIONAL 🇯🇵

Another busy day in Tokyo for Scotland’s Andrew Davies & Owen Carmichael!

💪 Owen rounded off his men’s singles campaign with a narrow defeat against Canada’s world No.20 Anthony Hay. Owen can be hugely proud of his performances against elite-level opposition throughout the tournament.

🔥 In men’s doubles, Andrew & Owen finished their group campaign in style, defeating Brazil’s De Oliveira Costa & Canada’s Xue 21-13, 21-19.

Unfortunately, the result wasn’t enough to see the pair progress from the group stages, but they can be proud of their performances throughout the week. 👏

🌟 Fantastic news for Andrew in the singles!

Results elsewhere went his way, securing his place in the round of 16! Andrew now faces Peru’s Nilton Quispe tomorrow.

The pair have previously met in doubles, but this will be their first singles meeting.

Best of luck tomorrow, Andrew — Scotland is behind you! 💪🏸

🏸 DAY ONE | YONEX Belgian International 🇧🇪

A busy opening day for Scotland’s shuttlers in Belgium, with some great battles, impressive performances and plenty more to come! 💪

⭐ Matthew Waring was the standout in men’s singles, winning three rounds of qualifying to earn his place in today’s main draw. He now faces French qualifier Lièvre.

🔥 Evan Kenny & Josh Taylor also came through an epic three-game men’s doubles qualifier against Bulgaria’s Pane & Stoyanov to reach the main draw. Their reward? A tie against Denmark’s Nebel & Søby today.

👏 Brooke Stalker & Ishbel McCallister put in a strong display against Dutch pairing Bang & Odijk, who eventually took the deciding game 21-9.

💪 James Robertson battled hard against experienced Bulgarian Stoyanov in a three-game encounter, while Finlay Jack was beaten in two games by Germany’s Vasudevan.

Josh Taylor & Ishbel McCallister also fought hard against Sweden’s third seeds Öhling & Molin but were beaten in straight games.

More Scottish action today!

At the time of writing, Kirsty Gilmour is one game up against Netherlands’ Weiland, while Alex Dunn & Julie MacPherson face Denmark’s Søby & Røjkjær.

The Grimley pairings and Julie & Ciara are still awaiting confirmation of their opponents, while Josh & Evan begin their main-draw campaign against Nebel & Søby.

A reminder to all partners, we kept this open so you could all enter and there is still a few unpaid players. Please also check as we have had a few partners withdraw, we do have a gent looking for a doubles partner.

We are also welcoming a few JNR players into the copper where they are testing the skills they are learning in training against seasoned social players, this is definitely exciting for the WCC team.

The gents and mixed side of the tournament has had an amazing uptake. We still have space in all events (due to the low ladies numbers) if you fancy entering, these events all look true to level.

The ladies bronze doubles is also looking amazing and will go ahead. The ladies silver will not currently go ahead as we only have 2 entries, it will not run unless we get another pair or 2 to enter.

As with the last event we will not have a coppers ladies singles or doubles. We hope that because we are actively moving players into different levels we will get the copper players back and playing.

🇯🇵 Japan Para Badminton International – Day 2

It was a challenging second day in Tokyo for Scotland’s Andrew Davies and Owen Carmichael. 💪🏸

Andrew battled hard against India’s world No.8 Solaimalai, but was beaten in two games. That leaves Andrew with one win and one defeat from his opening two group matches.

Owen also faced a higher-ranked opponent, taking on Brazil’s world No.18 De Oliveira Costa. Despite a spirited performance, Owen was defeated in two games and now has two defeats from his opening two group matches.

The Scots then teamed up in the men’s doubles against Canada’s world No.4 pairing of Kendrick and Lightfoot. Andrew and Owen put up a strong fight against one of the world’s best pairs, but the Canadians took the match in straight games.

Still all to play for tomorrow!

Andrew awaits the result of Solaimalai v Langelier to discover his final group position.

Owen faces Canada’s Hay, looking to finish the group stage on a high.

And Andrew and Owen will team up once again in the men’s doubles, taking on De Oliveira Costa of Brazil and Xue of Canada as they look to end their campaign with a victory. 🔥
