A reminder, as per BSJ rules, padded whips only are allowed for DDRC Ring 1 SJ classes. The rule came into play last year, we are strongly enforcing it this season, no alternative whips will be accepted in the ring.
See the below post from our qualifier Sunshine Tour for full details.
☀️ Sunshine Tour – Padded Baton Rules (Jumping & Eventers)
✅ Baton Type & Size
- Must be British Showjumping (BS) compliant.
- Length: 45–70 cm
- Padded section: Covers at least 2/5 of the baton
- No sharp edges, raised surfaces or writing/logos on the pad
- Held by the handle, with handle at the top
🛒 Need one? BS-approved batons are for sale at the Show Secretary’s office.
🐴 How to Use the Baton
Can be used only for 2 purposes:
- To help the horse go forward
- To support the shoulder and turning
When using on the shoulder:
- Keep both hands on the reins
- Tap gently down the shoulder
When using behind the leg:
- Use only to encourage forward movement
- Never swing overarm
- Total limit: Only 3 uses behind the leg in the arena.
🚫 Misuse = Disqualification
Never use the baton:
- In anger or to punish
- Before your round starts or after elimination
- Immediately after a refusal
- On the horse’s head, neck or face
- On the ground (after dismount or fall)
- If your arm goes above shoulder height
- If it injures the horse (cuts, weals)
