For a change of pace, I'll bring some source material, and it will be up to YOU to do some of the interpretation :)

Why is this important? HEMA is based on historical source material - I don't just make it up myself.

Some of this source material is easy enough to understand, some of it is painfully cryptic, and most of it is somewhere between. But becoming able to understand how these things are written and what any given passage might mean is a very a skill. And without practice, skills don't improve!

So we'll look at some source material and you'll have some opportunity to try to work out what it is suggesting that we do.

Due to roadworks, there will be no access to the Liverpool College sports campus on Wednesday 22nd (this week) or 29th (next week).

The venue had not been told about this until I asked them about it over the weekend, and they came back to me today sounding quite surprised (and a bit miffed) to confirm that the roads will indeed be closed on these dates.

So it looks like we have two weeks off from our regular sessions. The schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:

July

If you would like to do something to stay in motion during the next two weeks of cancellations, then there are a couple of options:

The July Fechtschule is this weekend! This Saturday, specifically, from 1-5pm. We'll have plenty of sparring time, and also a keynote lesson taught by Melissa Hainsworth:

Longsword workshop: dealing with larger, stronger opponents
I'm 5ft 5 and most of my opponents are bigger, stronger and taller than me, so I have some experience with dealing with that.

In this workshop we will examine the things you need to focus on, and how you should adapt your fencing if your opponent is stronger or taller than you, and how to deal if they're really aggressive.

I'll be sharing details on both how to approach the fight, i.e. mindset and strategy, as well as some specific techniques you can apply which I find work.

Melissa started fighting with swords doing Historical Re-enactment. When living in Italy, she transitioned to HEMA and joined the La Compania del Arma della Rosa e Spada and upon returning to Britain she and her husband Jordan opened the Academy of Steel.

Melissa is an instructor within the Academy of Steel which has grown to be the largest HEMA School in Wales and one of the largest in Britain. She is part of the team that organises and runs The Gathering of Wolves and Wolf Hunt events which run each year.

Melissa has taken part in a number of tournaments across Europe, bringing home prizes and medals in longsword, sword and buckler, sabre and rapier. Despite her focus being on fencing as a Martial Art rather than a sport, she is one of the highest rated female fencers in Britain. Her aim when competing is to prove that martial fencing is applicable to tournaments and if applied you can win even if you're smaller or weaker than your opponent.

She has been invited to teach at a number of HEMA events and schools in Europe and USA as a guest instructor. She is well versed in a variety of systems, favouring the writings of medieval and early renaissance Italian masters with a little German thrown into the mix.

Tickets are discounted a little until a week before the event, to encourage earlier bookings. Purchasing your ticket earlier gives us a better idea of how many people will be at the event, so that we can organise everything in good time with less stress!

It looks like we will have a warm evening today, but it should be safe enough for us to do the activity. Please come with plenty of water.

We will be looking at a few useful solo drills that we can practise at home, so that we don't need to be wearing fencing masks all evening. However, we will take the opportunity to turn the solo drills into paired drills, so that we can test them and see why they are relevant and helpful!

And please do remember that the July Fechtschule is coming up soon: not this weekend, but following Saturday, the 18th.
