Winsford Ajax vs Hurdsfield Vikings
A wet and windy morning saw the Vikings travel away to Winsford Ajax for what turned out to be a drama-packed fixture on a challenging, hilly pitch.
After last week’s defeat, the Vikings arrived with a point to prove. The first half saw them playing uphill and battling against the elements, but there was a real fire in their bellies as they looked to bounce back.
It was Winsford who struck first though, opening the scoring, but the Vikings kept their heads up and stuck to their game plan. Gradually, they began to string passes together, working the ball forward despite the difficult conditions.
Their persistence paid off when the Vikings were awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Lawson stepped up and calmly slotted it home to bring the score level.
It was a fairly even first half, albeit a scrappy one. The Vikings created some good chances, but Winsford’s keeper was having a blinder, pulling off some excellent saves to keep his side in the game.
Coach Lee continued to remind the Vikings to play their own football and not get drawn into the drama that was beginning to unfold.
Winsford were then awarded a free kick, which was struck well. Isla got a strong hand to it, but with the wind behind the ball, it found its way into the net, sending the Vikings into the half-time break trailing 2–1.
The half-time team talk clearly did the trick!
The Vikings came out for the second half with renewed determination, this time with the conditions in their favour, and it wasn’t long before they were back on level terms.
Isaac picked up the ball on the left and sent in a cross-come-shot that flew towards goal. Lawson managed to poke a toe on it to make absolutely sure, and the Vikings were back in business at 2–2!
As the game grew increasingly heated, fouls began flying in across the pitch. Both teams needed to keep their heads and concentrate on playing football. Rather than getting sucked into the goading, the Vikings tried to stay focused and crack on with the job.
And what a response! Austin found himself with the ball outside the box and absolutely hammered it home to put the Vikings ahead for the first time in the game. 3–2 Vikings!
There was some lovely passing football on show, with the Vikings finding their wingers well and creating opportunities out wide. Harry had an excellent game on the right, showing some great footwork and delivering dangerous crosses, despite taking a couple of nasty fouls along the way.
Lawson was superb in the CAM role, weaving in and out of challenges and driving the team forward with real urgency. Winsford often had multiple players closing him down whenever he got on the ball, but he continued to work hard and make things happen.
At the back, George once again commanded his defensive line brilliantly. The defence did a fantastic job of shielding Isla throughout the second half, and with very little coming their way in the final ten minutes, anything that did threaten was dealt with quickly and confidently.
The Vikings were finding plenty of success out wide, although there were occasions when that pass out to them could have perhaps come a little sooner.
With around ten minutes remaining, the Vikings won a corner. Austin stepped up to take it, whipped in a fantastic delivery and, in spectacular fashion, scored directly from the corner! A brilliant goal to put some daylight between the sides at 4–2.
The final whistle confirmed a superb 4–2 victory for the Vikings!
It was a brutally physical encounter, with plenty of fouls and no shortage of drama. However, the Vikings’ ability to keep their composure, stick to their game plan and focus on their own football clearly worked in their favour.
After last week’s disappointment, this was a well-earned, hard-fought win and a fantastic team effort from start to finish.
Players of the Match:
Lawson – A fantastic performance in the CAM role, bringing real urgency to the Vikings’ attack and driving forward with purpose. He took his penalty calmly and was always looking to make things happen.
Harry – Equally deserving of recognition after an excellent performance on the right. His footwork was superb, and he delivered some great crosses while continuing to battle through some tough challenges.
A brilliant effort from the whole squad. The Vikings showed character, determination and togetherness when it mattered most.
