🔥FULL TIME | 🧠Steel Mind WC XI 8–2 Darlington XL 11s FC🦓
What a game. What a performance. What a statement.
From the first whistle, this had the feeling of a competitive battle.
Darlington picked up an early yellow card for a lunging challenge as Steel immediately looked to play on the front foot. We created chance after chance, but somehow couldn't find the breakthrough. A handball from a dangerous cross gave us the perfect opportunity from the penalty spot, but the Darlo keeper guessed correctly to keep it level. Moments later, Ethan raced through one-on-one… and was denied again. Then another clear chance, and somehow their goalkeeper produced yet another outstanding save. The pressure was relentless - we were knocking on the door.
Finally, in the 17th minute, the breakthrough arrived. Keenan calmly slotted home to give Steel the lead, and it was no more than we deserved.
Football has a funny way of changing quickly though. Just four minutes later Darlington equalised from a corner, before taking the lead on 27 minutes with a clever dummy and a composed finish into the bottom corner. Despite controlling much of the game, we suddenly found ourselves 2–1 down.
The lads refused to panic.
Dave Mac came inches away from levelling with a brilliant drag back and left-footed effort that crashed against the post, while another Darlington booking followed after their full-back kicked the ball away in frustration. Then came the equaliser. A free kick deep in our own half was brilliantly knocked on by Woody, and Donachie finished superbly to make it 2–2. Game on.
The move of the half was still to come. Charlie Dixon floated a beautiful pass wide, Davies delivered a dangerous cross, and Woody thundered his strike towards goal. The keeper got a strong hand to it, but there was simply too much power behind it. 3–2 Steel Mind and a deserved lead going into half-time.
The second half began with both sides trading attacks, but once Steel Mind found their rhythm there was only going to be one winner. Excellent team football saw Keenan release Davies, who squared for Woody. His first effort was blocked, but he reacted quickest to smash the rebound into the top corner for 4–2.
A minute later we had another penalty after Woody was brought down in the box… and yes, the Darlington keeper saved again. Penalty practice is on the schedule for this week...
Steel Mind didn't let it affect them. Dixon threaded another superb through ball into Mortimer, whose shot was saved but cruelly deflected into the net off the defender for an own goal and 5–2.
Keenan's second came after Woody slipped him through, and he coolly found the bottom corner. Minutes later, Keenan completed a magnificent hat-trick, dancing past the last defender before calmly finishing to make it 7–2🎩
There was still time for one more. Woody produced an outrageous trivela through ball that split the defence, Donachie raced clear, rounded his man and confidently slotted home his second of the afternoon to complete an emphatic 8–2 victory.
The scoreline could have been even bigger with several late chances going narrowly wide, but there was no wiping the smiles off the faces of everyone involved. A fantastic team performance built on resilience, quality football, and clinical finishing when it mattered most.
