βοΈ Planning our 2027 camp got us thinking...
What makes a good training camp? π€
We've ran our training camps for 9 years in various locations and formats, here is what we think matters most:
π§ Spacious Hotel...
Everyone staying in the same place, but with enough room to find space and recharge when needed. We've used villas and smaller hotels in the best, but have settled on this.
ποΈ Safe open water location...
Something that is suitable for all abilities to feel safe, and small enough to keep an eye on the whole group, but big enough to do some distance.
π΄ Smooth quiet roads...
If you are going to cycle 10-20 hours you'll want no pot holes and as little traffic as possible.
πββοΈ 50m pool on site...
One of the main benefits of camp should be the ability to swim everyday. It's hard to swim that frequently at home, so set things up to make this achievable.
π Buffet meals...
In our experience if you don't have buffet meals, you will struggle to eat the required calories for the volume of training that is usually done on a camp. Also a big quality buffet = something for everyone.
πββοΈ Scenic and safe run routes...
We've had camps with complicated routes and rocky trails. Ideally you want a lovely flat and scenic route that no one can get lost on when their brain gets tired. Out and back routes work best for mixed groups.
π Private swim lanes...
Having your own lane for the group will mean you are guaranteed a quality swim, ideally with a few coaches on deck.
π΅ββοΈ Varied cycling terrain...
You'll want to do a mix of easy rides, hilly/hard rides, short rides and long rides. So picking somewhere that covers all the bases is best!
What's your favourite thing about going on a camp...? π
