It was a really enjoyable day at Southwell Golf Club yesterday for our Vice -Captains’ Day. Almost 60 people took part in the Greensomes competition, including some of our newest members, in support of our 3 Vice Captains - Tom Chambers, Charlie Hall and Ahmed Qureshi. Everyone enjoyed the fantastic condition of the course so a massive thank you to our Head Greenkeeper Dave Thomas and his team.

The competition saw some great scoring with three pairs on 41 points sharing 2nd, 3rd and 4th places including our current Vice Captains, Tom Chambers and Charlie Hall. However, winning the trophy during their captaincy years are our current Club and Lady Captains Toby Robinson and Jayne Bingham who shot an excellent 43 points. Congratulations to both of them.

Finally, to top off a great day, our current President Wally Hammond had a memorable moment with a hole in one on the 12th hole. Great playing Keith.

The Ladies Club Championships took place at Southwell Golf Club over 2 rounds, finishing on Saturday. Lady Captain Jayne Bingham held a solid lead after Round 1 but as we know, our course holds lots of danger on every hole and therefore, no lead ever feels enough. However, Jayne held her nerve during the 2nd round to secure the title and have the honour of being Ladies Champion in the same year that she is Lady Captain, a tremendous achievement and nothing Jayne doesn’t fully deserve.

In the nett competition, Sue Brownson took the title by three shots over Vice Captain Charlie Hall.

Well played Jayne and Sue and thanks as always to our greens team for their excellent presentation of the course.

A massive thank you to our Club President Keith Hammond for a really enjoyable President’s Day at Southwell Golf Club on Sunday. Keith is working really hard during the first year of his Presidency so it was great to see so many members turn out in support of Keith on the day. We also welcomed a good number of Keith’s golfing friends from other clubs and it was great to hear their positive comments about the course.

A number of people had donated raffle prizes with Keith providing an excellent golf bag which was won by Lady Captain Jayne Bingham. Again, the generosity of everyone resulted in a great boost to the fundraising efforts for our Captains’ charities - Cancer Research UK and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

The competitors enjoyed an excellent halfway house thanks to Keith’s family members so big thank you to them for looking after us so well.

Well done to the winning team of Lin Jenkins, Mark Gibbs, Dean Scott and Tom Chambers with an excellent net score of 53.

A great day and once again, many thanks to Keith.

Southwell Golf Club hosted a highly enjoyable and successful Charity Invitation Day last Sunday. Over 100 Members and guests played the course in an excellent condition thanks to the great efforts of our Greenkeepers who are regularly supported by a loyal group of volunteers.

Everyone took part in some fun putting and chipping competitions after their rounds and thanks to the generosity of the competitors, together with a number of local golf courses who donated courtesy rounds as prizes, we managed to raise Ā£1606 for our two Captains’ charities, Cancer Research UK and AMMF, The Cholangiocarcinoma Charity. That’s an incredible amount for a club such as ours and everyone involved should feel very proud of what was achieved.

Our Captains Jayne Bingham and Toby Robinson put in long days and proved what great ambassadors they are for Southwell Golf Club.

There were some good scores and with 84 points, the best score from a mixed or Ladies team was that of Southwell members Mark Duignam, Mark Gibbs, Jennifer Hubbard and Daryl Hutchings. The best Men’s score was 83 points from Southwell members Mark Stevens and Matt Messenger with their guests from Belton Woods, Rob Messenger (Matt’s DadšŸ˜€) and Ashley Wilkinson, both from Belton Woods.

Our Men played the Spring Cup on Sunday, their first major competition of the season at Southwell Golf Club. Many thanks to the Greenkeepers who presented the course in an excellent condition. It was great to see one of our newer members, Rocco Conway take his first honours board competition with a good score of 38 points made in challenging windy conditions. Many congratulations Rocco, hope it’s the first of many victories.

At Southwell Golf Club, we know we are incredibly fortunate to have the support of a membership which is constantly prepared to support the club through giving their time so willingly to help to run the club and to make improvements on and off the course. Recently, a large hedge has been removed thanks to the efforts of volunteer members working closely with the greens team and we know the greens team is appreciative of the help the members give. Our major competitions are now coming thick and fast and we are indebted to the time former Club Captain Ken Turk continues to give to the club in his capacity of Honorary Starter. Thanks everyone, your support is greatly appreciated.
