Thanks to our Social Committee for organising last night’s Xmas Dinner where the members enjoyed some great food from Bernie and burned some calories on the dance floor🕺💃

A great turnout from the members at Southwell Golf Club for the Turkey Trot, the first of our three festive competitions. Everyone enjoyed the excellent weather and thanks to the efforts of the greens staff, the course was in fantastic condition despite the recent heavy rains. Some great scoring in the Texas Scramble event with the winning team of Sue Brownson, John Burr, Gavin Stenson and Steve Collington taking top spot with a net 50. Runners up just one shot behind was the team of Gill Ruane, Dave Britten, Geoff Marshall and Eddie Harrington.

A great run of form for Junior Member Lottie Wright who within the space of one month, has won three honours board competitions. The first came in the Ladies Doubles Final playing alongside Sheila Pawson and Lottie then “went solo” and won the Ladies Medal Final last week. Today she teamed up with her elder Brother Sam Wright and the double act proved unstoppable, defeating Liz Martin and Kevin Walker in the final of the Mixed Doubles. Great playing Lottie.

Not to be outdone in the family bragging stakes, Lottie and Sam’s Dad, Chris Wright last week won the Maythorne Cup, the summer league for Southwell’s Men, having played good, consistent golf throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Sheila Pawson proved her recent victory with Lottie was no flash in the pan and showed good form to win today’s Autumn Cup, defeating Carole Ablewhite and Gill Ruane on countback.

Our Ladies hosted a highly successful Autumn Leaves Ladies Open on Wednesday with 80 golfers from throughout the East Midlands taking part. Many congratulations to the winning team of Margaret White, Helen Kirschener, Elaine Faithorn from South Kyme GC and Kate Graves from Sleaford GC.

In addition to everyone having a great day, the event raised a magnificent £344 for Dementia UK, the nominated charity of our Lady Captain Jayne Bingham. Many thanks to everyone for your support.

More major competitions have been completed in the last few days. On Saturday in the Men’s singles knockout final between Tom Chambers and Steve Price, Tom performed a great comeback to win the match 2&1 despite being 3 down after 9 holes. Meanwhile, the Ladies Medal Final saw Lottie Wright win her second honours board competition in 8 days. After her victory in the Ladies Doubles knockout last week, this time her nett 70 was enough to give Lottie a 2 strokes winning margin over Liz Martin.

The Men’s Medal final on Sunday saw some fantastic scores with no less than 8 golfers scoring in the 60s. Winner with a nett 65 was Andy Duckmanton with the narrowest of margins with Martin Marshall and Neil Dodd just one stroke further behind.

Today was the final of the Ladies Singles Knockout held between Lady Captain Jayne Bingham and Gill Ruane. Both have been in great form in recent weeks but Gill managed to avenge her loss in last week’s Ladies Doubles final with a convincing 5&3 victory.

Well done to all of the winners and here’s hoping your great from continues into the Autumn.

Many thanks to everyone who supported yesterday’s Bob Mitchell Seniors Open. We had an excellent turnout of golfers not just from Southwell Golf Club but from clubs throughout the Midlands.

As always, there are a number of people to thank who helped the day go smoothly, including David Cobb, Mike Harness, Mike Jenkins, Sheila Pawson, Lin Jenkins, Ken Turk, Marie Cobb, Steve Parr, Ian Pollard, Jayne Bingham, Graham Coulson and Pat Pickering…apologies if we have missed anyone!! It was also great to welcome Di and Grant Mitchell back to the club for the prize presentation.

The course was in great condition thanks to the efforts of the greens staff and this was reflected with some fine scoring. However, with a magnificent total of 44 points, Southwell Golf Club member Chris Baines played some excellent golf to take the top prize.

It is with much regret that we announce the passing last week of Keith Hartley, one of our long-standing and most popular members, following a brave battle against cancer and COVID-19.

Keith joined Southwell Golf Club in 1997 and loved being at the club just as much as we loved having him there. A tremendously popular member, Keith was a gentleman, a true character and it was a pleasure to spend time in his company. He loved the game of golf and had played at many of the top courses throughout the country. Although he often made light of his golfing ability, he played a great game and represented Southwell in numerous inter-club competitions.

Over many years, Keith supported the greens staff with a range of volunteering activities and his engineering background meant there weren’t too many tasks he could not turn his hand to.

Keith will be missed not just by everyone at Southwell Golf but by many of the members at clubs throughout the area. R.I.P. Keith.

The honours board competitions are coming thick and fast as we approach the end of the golfing season. On Saturday, Sheila Pawson and Lottie Wright won the Ladies Doubles knockout final, defeating Gill Ruane and Sharon McLeod in a close match which went all the way to the 18th green. After Gavin Stenson’s excellent score yesterday to secure the Heron-Audi trophy in Captain’s Day, today it was the turn of the Seniors in the Medal Final. It was a closely contested competition with just 3 shots separating the top 5 places but with a net 68, Dave Williams took the honours. Many congratulations to all of the winners.

A fantastic and enjoyable day at Southwell Golf Club thanks to Paul Wilson who was an excellent host for yesterday’s Captain’s Day. A great turnout for the competition which saw some strong performances from the members. Afterwards, Bernie and his team provided a superb post round meal and we were treated to some great entertainment from Ben, one of Paul’s sons who is clearly a great singer. Thanks to Paul for a very generous prize table including nearest the pins, longest and most accurate drives. Well done to all of the winners, specifically Ann Watson whose excellent 40 points saw her take top spot in the Ladies competition but an outstanding 45 points from Gavin Stenson made him a clear winner and recipient of the Heron-Audi trophy.

Many thanks to Rosemary Hardcastle, our President for hosting an enjoyable President’s Day at the club today. Nice summer weather and the course was presented in excellent condition which led to some great scoring. Many congratulations to the winners of the President’s Bowl and President’s Vase, Steve Collington and Jayne Bingham respectively who each scored an excellent 40 points to ensure their names will be on the honours board this season. Thanks as always to Richard Britten for scrutineering and to Bernard Forbes and his team for a great meal.

A great Professional’s Day today hosted by Tim Newham. Some great golf played and a fantastic winning score of 54.5 from Sheila Pawson, Richard Pawson and Gavin Stenson. Thanks to Tim and to the greens staff for their efforts in preparing the course and to Bernie and his team for a tasty BBQ. It was great to see so many of our members’ friends and family down BBC at the club, particularly Keith Hartley, Alan Asman, Matt Hartley and Martin Stretch….we hope you all enjoyed the day😂

Today was the second round of the Men's Club Championships and winning the John Lee Cup for the second time was Keith Hammond. Keith put together two solid rounds and was fully deserving of his 6 shot victory over his nearest competitor Brian Rice. Congratulations Wally from everyone at the club and also a big well done to Nick Bingham, winner of the Club Shield for the best Nett prize.

Photos from Southwell Golf Club's post 16/07/2022

Good luck to all the competitors playing in tomorrow's Lady Captain's Day. Jayne Bingham has put a tremendous amount into her Captaincy year and deserves to have a fantastic day. The weather will certainly give us a hot day, let's see if the scores are equally scorching!

16/07/2022

A fantastic performance today in the Trinity Cup by Pat Pickering and Bernie Forbes. They shot an excellent 44 points to give them a comfortable victory margin of 4 points ahead of Runners-Up Chris Gibson and Jason Hill. A great effort in some tropical conditions!!

14/07/2022

It's great to be able to report on more great performances from our teams at Southwell Golf Club. Last night, our Men's team had an excellent 4.5 - 1.5 away victory at Mapperley Golf Club. Not to be outdone, today the Ladies defeated The Rushcliffe Golf Club 6.5 - 0.5 in a home Bronze League fixture. Another great result so well done to both teams.

14/07/2022

Congratulations to Chris Gibson and Maureen Todd who yesterday ensured their names will be on the honours board this season with victory in the Ladies Foursomes Plate. Chris and Maureen shot a two under par net 70 to give them a narrow victory margin over runners-up, Jennifer Hubbard and Jan Charlesworth.

04/07/2022

Our members continue to put in some great performances not only at Southwell Golf Club but on away courses. This afternoon in the summer meeting of the Nottinghamshire County Ladies Golf Association held at Norwood Park, Lady Vice-Captain Charlie Hall scored an excellent 37 points and secured the Jubilee Bowl for the best overall nett score. Great playing Charlie and many congratulations from all the members.🏌🏻‍♀️👍

04/07/2022

Good luck to all competitors in today’s second round of the Seniors Club Championship. The leaderboard is tightly packed so a number of players are still in with a good chance. Let’s hope for an exciting day 🏌🏻‍♂️🏌🏻‍♂️

A big thank you from the members to Charlie Hall, Kevin Walker and Paul Burton for an enjoyable Vice Captains' Day. The course was looking great although strong winds made for some challenging conditions, particularly on the Front 9. Congratulations to Malcolm Todd and Roger Ruane whose 40 points total saw them finish in top spot.
