🤯 𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒!

Surround yourself with people who have bigger goals than you.

But let’s be honest, being surrounded by ambitious people doesn’t automatically make you a better goalkeeper.

Your environment matters, but what actually happens inside that environment matters even more.

You can be in a goalkeeper session three or four times a week, work incredibly hard, leave exhausted and still not be getting better at the things that actually matter in goalkeeping.

That’s one of the biggest problems I see in goalkeeper development. We sometimes confuse hard work with good work.

A goalkeeper can make hundreds of saves and still struggle with positioning, movement, decision making, crosses or playing under pressure.

Being busy isn’t the same as improving. The environment should challenge you, but it should also make you think.

You need people around you who are prepared to question you, give you honest feedback and push you outside what feels comfortable.

You also need coaches who understand that development isn’t about creating the hardest possible session.

It’s about creating the right problems for the goalkeeper to solve.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫:

✅ High standards
✅ Honest feedback
✅ Better questions
✅ Real competition
✅ Quality coaching

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝:

🚫 Training for the sake of training
🚫 Fear of mistakes
🚫 Constant comparison
🚫 Low standards
🚫 Confusing effort with progress

Here’s the controversial bit…

You don’t need to train with the best goalkeeper. You need to train where you get better.

Be challenged. Make mistakes. Learn.

The best environment is the one that leaves you better than when you arrived.

🤕 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐔𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐍 𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆!

Concussion in goalkeeping is still one of the most misunderstood injuries in the game.

Too often, it's dismissed as "just a knock" because the goalkeeper gets back to their feet or wants to carry on.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬.

If a goalkeeper takes a hit to the head and feels dizzy, confused, slow, emotional, or “not quite right” they are NOT okay to continue.

𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫.

Playing on with a concussion doesn't make a goalkeeper tougher.

❌It doesn't build resilience.
❌It doesn't accelerate development.

It only increases the risk of a more serious injury and potentially long-term consequences.

🧠 Symptoms are not always obvious
🤕 Loss of consciousness is NOT required
⏱ Delayed symptoms are common
🚫 Playing through it makes recovery longer
👶 Young brains are more vulnerable

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬:

Goalkeepers will always say they are fine. They want to stay on. They do not want to let the team down.

So the call is on YOU. If there is any doubt, they come off. No exceptions.

✅A keeper taken off can play next week.
❌A keeper left on might not play again.

💨𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘!

Watch almost any young goalkeeper after they make an error. The game instantly speeds up in their mind.

Every decision feels more urgent.

❌ Goal kicks are rushed.
❌ Passes are forced.
❌ They rush off their line.
❌ Emotion takes over.
❌ They stop scanning.
❌ Confidence drops.

They think they're showing resilience.
They're actually showing a lack of control.

The goalkeeper who looks slow is often the one seeing the game the quickest. They're not wasting energy trying to erase the last mistake.

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯:

🫁 One deep breath.
👀 Scan before you play.
⏳ Delay the restart.
🧠 Think before reacting.
🎯 Win the next action.
🧤 Set your feet first.
📍Trust your position.

Young goalkeepers are obsessed with intensity.
Reliable goalkeepers are obsessed with control.

The game doesn't reward panic. It doesn't care how frustrated you are or how badly you want to put it right.

It rewards the goalkeeper who's back in control before the next phase even starts.

🧤 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐑𝐓!

Talented goalkeeper Jacob Carney is on the verge of joining Larne Football Club, with the deal expected to be finalised this week.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞…

Carney could be the standout goalkeeper available on a free transfer in the NIFL this summer. Consistent, reliable and proven at this level, his availability without a transfer fee makes him one of the best pieces of business on the market..

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭.

🔴 25 years old
🏟️ Manchester United academy graduate
⭐ Glenavon standout last season
🦶 Confident playing out from the back
🎯 Strong distribution
💪 Proven at NIFL Premiership level

Carney was one of Glenavon’s standout performers last season, despite the club’s relegation, and his performances suggest he’s ready for another Premiership challenge.

With Dylan Graham expected to join Carrick Rangers on loan, Carney looks set to compete with Rohan Ferguson for the No.1 shirt at Larne.

That makes this more than just adding another goalkeeper to the squad.

If Carney comes in and performs better than Ferguson, should there be any reason he doesn’t start?

Goalkeepers should be judged on what they produce, not simply on who had the shirt first.

🏐𝐇𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐒: 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓!

Forget distance. Blaine Hughes is setting the standard for kick-outs because he puts the ball exactly where he wants it, every single time.

𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭.

Calling it talent is often just an excuse. If it's all talent, nobody has to question their own work ethic.

You don't get Hughes' kick-outs from two group sessions a week with Armagh GAA. He puts in the miserable, unglamorous solo work at Carrickcruppen GAA while everyone else is at home.

Most young goalkeepers don't have a kick-out problem. They have a practice problem. Too many players are collecting coaching tips when they should be collecting footballs.

If you want kick-outs like Blaine Hughes, stop asking what drill he's doing and start asking how many footballs he's kicking every week.

The answer to that question is probably the answer to your own.

🍟 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍?

Primary school kids are turning down birthday cake, talking about "clean eating," and treating a McDonald's trip like a red card offense.

Goalkeeping is easily the most lonely, high-pressure spot on the pitch. Throwing adult performance diets onto a young child isn't turning them into a pro. It just turns them into a bundle of nerves.

Biologically, the logic is completely broken. Primary school kids are in a phase of rapid neurological development and growth spurts.

Their bodies rely on high caloric intake and metabolic flexibility. They need broad energy, not adult restriction.

Kids don't deal in shades of grey. Tell a young kid a crisp is "bad," and they don't think about sports science. They just start stressing over their lunchbox.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:

🍎 Growth demands calories
🧠 Kids aren't adults
🥗 Variety beats restriction
🍕 Ditch the guilt
🧤 Energy drives performance
🥪 Parents set menus
⚽ Skill beats supplements
🍦 Keep sports fun

This obsession with treating primary school children like mini-professionals isn't high-performance coaching. It’s adult ego hijacking common sense.

If your young goalkeeper works hard in training and wants a burger on the way home, let them eat the burger.

Save the performance nutrition for when they're old enough to notice that recovery takes longer than it used to.

🚫 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒.

Here's the reality check...

Most youth goalkeepers who don't get scouted aren't being overlooked. They simply weren't the best goalkeeper on the day.

That's football.

Yes, scouts can get it wrong. They miss players. But blaming them won't make you a better goalkeeper.

What will?

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭:

🙏 Thank the coaches for their time.
🚶 Walk away with professionalism.
❌ Don't argue or make excuses.
🎒 Leave the disappointment there.
⚡ Use it as fuel, not an excuse.
🎯 Train with more purpose than before.
🌞 Keep good people around you.
😄 Stay confident and keep showing up.

As a goalkeeper, you control your attitude, your preparation and your work ethic.

❌You don't control who gets picked.

If you think one trial defines you, you're looking at football the wrong way. If you think one trial owes you a place, you're looking at it even more wrong.

The best response to rejection isn't a complaint.
It's becoming so good they can't ignore you next time.

⏱️𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒!

The standard idea is simple: split the minutes down the middle to keep things fair for young goalkeepers.

Goalkeeping isn't a rotation position like midfield or attack. There is only one spot, and giving out guaranteed minutes regardless of input creates a false environment.

In the real world, opportunity is tied to output. When game time is guaranteed no matter how a player trains, we aren't teaching fairness.

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥.

There’s only one shirt on the pitch. You don’t get it just because your parents paid the sub fees, and you definitely don't get it just for showing up.

𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬:

🧤 Arriving ready to train
🔁 Repeating the fundamentals
🧠 Learning from every mistake
🔥 Responding with resilience
🤝 Supporting teammates
📈 Striving to improve daily

Equal opportunity to earn your spot is essential.

Guaranteed minutes without accountability is just short term comfort at the expense of long term development.

Game time shouldn't be handed out out of habit. It should reflect the effort put in when nobody is watching.

Raise your standards, focus on your habits, and make the decision easy for your coach.

❌𝐌𝐎𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐍 𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐄!

Modern football is lying to young goalkeepers.

Coaches praise "sweeper-keepers" with nice passing stats, while ignoring the fact that half of them can't command a box or hold a basic shot.

The Highlight culture has ruined the position.

Goalkeepers chase flashy parries for social media, but fold the second a physical forward puts them under pressure.

If you aren't dominating, it’s not bad luck. Your standards are soft.

𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫?

Disappear for 6 months. Stop chasing approval and build an unshakeable game in silence.

🧠 Kill the victim mindset.
💥 Embrace the physical demands.
🚫 Reject modern-day fluff.
⚡ Build raw power and strength.
🤖 Automate competence. Master the basics.
🥗 Treat your body like armour.
🛑 Eliminate brain fog. No late nights.
🦁 Rule your box. It's your territory.

The position doesn't care about your feelings. It only respects cold, repeated ex*****on under pressure.

✊𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐠𝐨. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞.

✊𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐙 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓?

Most people will say it's his shot-stopping, and they're right. But I don't think that's what truly separates him from the rest. It's everything he does before he even has to make a save.

I listened to a podcast recently analysing his behaviour on the pitch, and it explained something every goalkeeper should understand.
For 90 minutes, Martínez plays like the pitch belongs to him.

🧤 Confident body language
🗣️ Clear communication
💪 Takes ownership
🧠 Composed under pressure
⚡ Leads with presence
👥 Gives teammates confidence

Football is built on perception. If your goalkeeper looks calm and in control, defenders play with more confidence. If he looks uncertain, that feeling spreads just as quickly.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭í𝐧𝐞𝐳'𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬.

He doesn't just make saves.
He gives his team belief.

That's why he so often delivers in big moments. He isn't waiting for confidence to arrive when the pressure is on. He's created that feeling from the first minute.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡'𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞:

🧤 Technique will always matter
🗣️ Presence matters just as much
💬 The way you communicate
🔄 The way you respond to mistakes
💪 The confidence you give your teammates

These aren't extras.
They're part of the job.

Every goalkeeper can improve their presence.
You don't have to make a world-class save to influence a game.

Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from the way you lead before the save is ever needed.
