✝️ NICCOLÒ DELL’ARCA’S LAMENTATION OVER THE DEAD CHRIST 1463–1490 🙏🏼
The sculptural group of the Compianto sul Cristo morto (‘Lamentation over the Dead Christ’) by Niccolò dell’Arca is located in the main chapel of the Church of Santa Maria della Vita, Bologna. This dramatic depiction of sorrow and death was commissioned by the brotherhood of the Battuti Bianchi around 1463 and consists of a group of life-sized figures – the Madonna and the Three Marys, St John the Apostle and Joseph of Arimathea – weeping over the dead body of Christ, which is laid out between them ready for deposition in the tomb
• The Virgin Mary: Hands clasped, body collapsed inward in maternal desolation.
• Mary Magdalene: The most dynamic figure—rushing forward with mouth open in a scream, robes and drapery billowing as if in a violent wind.
• Mary of Cleophas: Hands thrust forward as if to shield herself from the unbearable sight.
• Mary Salome: Clutches or digs into her thighs/knees in anguish, struggling to stay upright.
• Saint John the Evangelist: More restrained, hand supporting his chin in silent, paralyzed weeping.
• Joseph of Arimathea (or Nicodemus): Often shown kneeling or set slightly apart, in contemporary Renaissance dress, sometimes holding tools
