We've had quite a few requests about when we start our new term of classes.

We are back for our Summer edition and invite everyone to join us for Social Dancing on Sunday 12th July 2026.
We always try to go the extra mile to make things special. Our refreshments table is decked out with our special guilt free cake! and cucumber sandwiches (got to have cucumber sandwiches at a tea dance, right?). There are also Free-From options. Of course there will be lots of tea, coffee & squash to keep you refreshed and hydrated for the dance floor.
We have our PA that was bought specifically for this event to give the best sound possible. Our DJs will be hard at work playing the best in Jazz Swing for dancers. Our venue also provides one of *the best dance floors in Oxford* for you to bust your best moves and Swing Out!
The Summertown Swing Tea Dance Club is now the best value social dance for Swing dancers in Oxford. It really is for everyone, so get your dancing shoes polished and head to Summertown for an afternoon of dancing.

Good mornin’ folks! Well its Wednesday and your newsletter is waiting for you in your inbox. It is also a very special Wednesday because tonight is the last class led by Chris & Lucy at Summertown.

That means it will be a very special night and an opportunity for everyone to say thank you for all the hard work they have put in over the years. When Andrew and I first conceived Summertown, we wanted the quality of teaching to be central to our plans. They only became a reality when Chris & Lucy agreed to be a part of it, and without them everything we have done since may never have happened.

Whether you have been away for a while, a regular, or if you are a new dancer, having joined us recently, tonight we encourage everyone to come along.

We have spoken to the school and we have the option of moving out into the gardens again, which are absolutely beautiful and very pleasant to dance in as the sun sets. The structure of the buildings around us keep the heat of the sun off the area where we are dancing and they direct a corridor of gentle breeze created by them. This wafts the sweet smell of summer blooms as we dance. It really is quite lovely and a very pleasant way to dance of an evening.

This evening we are taking on The Shim Sham, and we start at 7:30pm. As usual head to The Cherwell School South Site, Marston Ferry Road, Oxford, OX2 6UX. The class is All Levels so please get to us as early as you can.

It’s Big Band Swing night tonight (Saturday 27th June 2026) with The Bob Cutting Big Band at the second of our Summertown Speakeasy Live Jazz Music & Dance Evenings. Tickets are on-sale now and the website will remain open until 3pm. After that tickets will be available at the door £18 Non-Members & £15 Members. It’s Big Band Swing night with The Bob Cutting Big Band in Summertown this Saturday 27th June 2026. This is the second of our Summertown Speakeasy Live Jazz Music & Dance Evenings. Tickets are on-sale now for an evening of live music & dancing with The Bob Cutting Big Band. Bob is no stranger to the Miller sound having played with The Miller Orchestra when it was run by Herb Miller, Glenn’s brother. Oxford will swing to the Miller sound again with a full Jazz Swing Orchestra & the sounds of the classic Jazz Swing era of the '30s and '40s.. Nothing quite sounds like a big band, beating out the rhythm and this one is going to be awesome!

Our patrons tell us that The Speakeasy is a special place with a sound system that fills its ballroom sized dance floor. Custom made Art Deco ambient lighting provide a vintage feel. There is Free Parking, and our snacks table features everything from treats, healthy options and ‘free-from. We also provide tea, coffee and squash all included in your entry price. We do not provide a cash bar but you are free to bring in any other refreshments you wish.
Swing Dance Summertown is a not-for-profit member organisation which is run completely by volunteers. We have some of the most experienced teachers around and love to dance.

We always have a trick up our sleeve at Summertown and yesterday evening was another example of that.
The question was how do we create the best environment for our dancers who all wanted to enjoy a summer's evening looking cool in the heat.
The solution was to take our class outside into the gardens. Right now the Honeysuckle and Roses are absolutely gorgeous and fragrant summer perfume surrounded everyone. The buildings provide some welcome shade once the sun starts to drop in the sky and there was even a welcome breeze blowing through.
The gardens have astro-felt on the ground and this is surprisingly pleasant to dance on, providing a little bit of softness underfoot, without becoming hard work.
The class itself was very low impact with a focus on connection and how to look cool on the dance floor as you create a conversation through the dance with your partner.
We have run social dance evenings in this space during Summer before but this is the first time we have tried a class. Everyone said how much they enjoyed it which was wonderful to hear.
Even when it's hot in Summertown, you can be cool on our dance floor. Huge thanks to everyone who came along, we hope you had a lot of fun.
