With far too many lives sadly lost in open water this summer, it feels more important than ever to keep sharing simple water safety advice—not to frighten people, but to help everyone feel prepared.

Just last week, two young brothers were caught in strong, fast-moving water off the North Norfolk coastline. One of the boys used this very advice to help keep himself afloat until members of the public reached him, and thankfully both brothers were brought safely back to shore.

It is a powerful reminder that 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐄 really can save a life.

Please take a moment to read through these steps and talk about them with your children. Floating is something we practise from the earliest stages of swimming lessons because it isn’t just a swimming skill—it’s a lifesaving one.

If you ever find yourself in difficulty: stay calm, tilt your head back, control your breathing and float until you can call for help or swim to safety.

A simple message, but one we should all know and share. 💙

🚨 PENRITH’S SWIMMING FUTURE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT 🚨

Penrith Swimming Club’s introductory provision is a vital link between swimming lessons and club-level swimming—creating a clear pathway for local children to continue developing, competing and enjoying the sport.

Removing it risks breaking that pathway and threatening the future of a club that has served our community for 145 years.

💙 OVER 600 SIGNATURES IN JUST 30 HOURS

In just 30 hours, more than 600 people have signed our petition to stand with Penrith Swimming Club.

We are fighting a proposal from GLL/Better to stop Penrith Swimming Club continuing the introductory swimming provision that develops children towards club and competitive swimming.

Westmorland and Furness Council released a statement to the local press containing a number of claims about our club which we strongly dispute and believe do not accurately reflect the arrangements that have existed at Penrith Leisure Centre.

We will continue to challenge those claims and make sure the voice of our swimmers, families and volunteers is heard.

For 145 years, Penrith Swimming Club has developed swimmers in this community. We are run entirely by volunteers, helped drive the creation of the Frenchfield Teaching Pool and continue to invest thousands of pounds every year into swimming facilities in Penrith.

We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking to be allowed to continue what generations of local people have worked so hard to build.

Now we need our community behind us.

I’m swapping the swimming pool for a tent and heading off to Cheshire for Guide camp tomorrow morning! ⛺️

I’ll be out of office from Saturday 8th August until Saturday 15th August and won’t be responding to messages or emails during this time.

We've been nominated again 🤩

✨ FEEDBACK FRIDAY ✨

This week’s lovely feedback comes from one of our adult swimmers following their first open-water coaching session last week! 🥳

As someone who regularly swims in the lake, they wanted some support to help them swim further and more confidently using both breaststroke and front crawl.

Just 20 minutes into the session, we’d covered the basics and they managed to swim an incredible 400 metres continuously before pausing! 🏊🏻‍♀️

Sometimes, all you need is a little support to bring out that quiet confidence! 💙

We have more open-water sessions planned throughout the summer. If you’d like to jump on board too, please get in touch!

☀️ Summer Update ☀️

As the first week of the holidays draws to a close, Marion is heading back to Suffolk and Norfolk for a week with family and friends 🥰

This means that she is out of Cumbria for a week, but not out of contact! However, replies this week may be slightly ad-hoc.
