Yogi Sanctuary

Yogi Sanctuary I discovered yoga as a single mum of a demanding toddler. Having been active and fit all of my life, I was shocked at the state that I was in.

A beautiful, peaceful space in North Cardiff

Fit by Wix app code EMAYRP I was working full time, overweight, unfit and needing to find something that I could do in my own home. I remember downloading an app and struggling to do even the most basic asanas (postures). The beginners yoga that I followed was gentle on my stiff, unfit body, which was good because I really could do very little! But when I rolled out my mat it gave me a peaceful sanctuary that I couldn't get anywhere else. It felt like a moving meditation. It wasn't until a few years ago, with my son all grown up, that I was able to really turn my attention to me. I joined a gym and lost weight, became fitter than I had been in over two decades and found a love and respect for my body that had been missing for many years. I went to my first ever yoga class on the gyms open day and that is when I really fell in love with yoga! I have seen my body change, my health change and I have gained an understanding of myself and what I want in my life. I started to dream that maybe one day I could become a yoga teacher and help others feel the same peace, empowerment, energy and rejuvenation that I get when on my mat. October 2020, I took the plunge and enrolled on a 200HR Hatha and Restorative Teacher Training course with Cardiff Yoga School. Amanda opened my eyes to a world beyond breath and physical movement. Yoga is so much more than just the postures and breathing and I feel like I have only just begun my journey into understanding the incredible effects of living and embodying yoga. This will be a life long learning for me. And the more I learn, the more I can share this incredible life changing experience with others. I have since then qualified in Kids Yoga - I dont know who gets the most joy from these classes the kiddies or me. And following my love of strong althetic yoga I recently qualitifed as a Rocket Yoga instructor. I love a strong vinyasa class that gets my blood pumping, my muscles burning and my heart singing with its powerful flow, but I also appreciate the subtle gentle benefits of breath, the life changing affects of inward focus, the importance of correct alignment in building and protecting a flexible, strong, healthy body and I have learnt to treasure the calming effects of a restorative practice. I remember what it is like to barely be able to move so can understand a beginners perspective, but I am also incredibly proud to now be able to work at a strong intermediate level. Last year I took my training further studying Sound Healing and qualifing with the Complimentary Medical Association. With Alchemy Crystal Bowls and Gongs I now offer the incredible healing vibrational energy of sound healing to my classes and events. Sharing my love of yoga and sound healing with the physical and mental health benefits with my community is the best job in the world!

Are you a circuit training instructor or group fitness instructor and available on Fridays at 5.30pm to run and grow our Friday after work studio based circuits class?
We are looking for someone with the knowledge and enthusiasm to help our yogis build strength and fitness. With dumbbells (from 1.5 kilo to 15 kilo), kettle bells, TRX, bands, stability ball and body weight we can offer a full circuits class to our members - we just need someone to run it for us.
Please get in touch if this is you.

Visitors to the studio can’t fail to notice that Sarah has been back to do a pre Autumn sort out. The flower bed has been weeded and cleaned up, new gravel has been laid to our little Buddha fountain and the planters have been refreshed too. It looks really beautiful - a huge thank you to her 💛

Sarah, who is one of our yogis and a local resident in Pentyrch, has asked if I could share with you a little about her latest challenge and I have gladly agreed.

Sarah is running the London Marathon raising money for FND Dimensions. FND is a Functional Neurological Disorder, a condition where there is a problem with how the brain and nervous system send and receive signals. Sarah developed this debilitating illness herself and FND was a huge support for her.

In her own words “This challenge means so much to me. Before developing FND, I completed the Newport Marathon in 2018. Just six months later, an accident triggered my FND, leaving me struggling to put one foot in front of the other and relying on a wheelchair to get out and about. There was a time when I couldn’t imagine ever running again — let alone running 26.2 miles.

Running the London Marathon for FND Dimensions is not only a personal challenge but an opportunity for me to give back, raising awareness and vital funds for others affected by FND.”

Perhaps the practice of yoga isn’t simply learning to listen to ourselves.
Perhaps it is staying curious enough to realise that the answer might have changed.

As my mentor Adam Husler first told me on his Level Up programme, yoga is a practice of self-enquiry.

But self-enquiry only works if we are willing to enquire again - to notice the difference between what we experience now and what we have come to believe about ourselves.

Our bodies change. Our strength changes. Our mobility changes. Our confidence changes. Our lives change.

Yet the stories we tell ourselves can remain remarkably fixed.

So our practice needs to evolve too. Sometimes that means softening. Sometimes going further. Sometimes resting. Sometimes exploring.

To practise with the body and mind we have today, rather than the perception of ourselves we created in the past.

Perhaps this is where sthira and sukha — effort and ease — really come alive. Enough curiosity to discover what is available today, and enough awareness to know when enough is enough.

In this week flow classes with Stef, we’re putting that curiosity into practice. Our ladder flow gives us repetition — another chance, and then another, to notice how the body responds and whether the answer changes.

Come and practise with the body you have today.

The return of our wonderful monthly Earth, Sky & Sound events begins on Friday 30th October 💛 This deeply restorative journey is the epitome of self love and care.

Embrace the gentle release of a quiet contemplative yin yoga practice that will invite you to leave behind the noise and drama of your week and step onto your mat with an intention to slow down, stretch it out and drop fully into the present moment before moving onto the calming effect of floating in our silk hammocks while being supported by the soothing vibrations of therapeutic sound.

✨Guided grounding meditation sat on h**p and buckwheat meditation cushions
✨Candlelit Yin with Nicola, on padded cotton mats with blankets, bolsters, blocks and other props
✨Floating Sound Bath with Stef with alchemy Crystal bowls, gongs and chimes while you lie in the hammocks covered with a thick fleecy blanket with lavender eye pillows
✨Refreshments brought to you as you sit resting in the hammocks or with friends sat once again in the ground

Two hours well spent
Last Friday of each month 🥰

How’s your balance?

It’s something we rarely think about - until suddenly we need it.
Stepping off a kerb.
Getting dressed standing up.
Reaching into a cupboard.
Walking over uneven ground.
Catching ourselves when we stumble.

As we get older, maintaining our balance, strength and coordination becomes increasingly important.
Research has even found associations between the ability to balance on one leg and wider measures of health and longevity.

But I’m less interested in turning balance into a test of how well we’re ageing.
I’m interested in keeping us doing the things we love for as long as possible.

That’s a big part of our Chair Supported Yoga class.
And despite the name, we don’t spend the whole class sitting down.

We use the chair as a tool. Much of the practice is seated and accessible, but around 20 minutes is spent standing with the chair there for support while we gently work on balance, leg strength, mobility, coordination and confidence.

No need to be able to touch your toes.
No need to already have good balance.
No need to worry about keeping up.

In fact, if your balance isn’t what it once was, that’s a very good reason to come.

Because growing older might be inevitable.
Losing confidence in what our bodies can do doesn’t have to be.

🪑Chair Yoga - A gentle, supportive practice to help you keep moving, keep balancing and keep doing more of life.

“I’m not flexible.”
“I can’t balance.”
“That’s my bad side.”
“I always need the brick for this.”
“I’m terrible at that pose.”

How many things about your body have you decided are true … without ever stopping to ask if they’re still true?

Over the last couple of weeks in class, we’ve been exploring what happens when we stop practising the body we think we should have and start paying attention to the one that actually arrived on the mat.

And something rather lovely has been happening.
Bricks are being used without prompting. Child’s poses are being taken.
People are pausing, adapting, exploring, making choices rather than simply following instructions.

So next week, we’re going a little deeper.

Because sometimes the thing we’re listening to isn’t our body at all.
It’s an old story we’ve been telling ourselves.

Next week, I’m going to invite you to question a few of those stories.

To try something before deciding you can’t.
To notice before deciding you need help.
To explore before deciding what your body is capable of today.

No proving. No achieving. No expectation.
Just curiosity.

Svadhyaya isn’t simply observing ourselves, self-study becomes interesting when we’re willing to discover that our assumptions about ourselves might be wrong

What if you don’t already know?
Come and find out on the mat next week. 💛

There will always be a reason not to come later.

The meeting that overruns.
The traffic.
The dinner that needs making.
The sofa that suddenly looks very inviting.
The tiredness that tells you tomorrow instead.

And sometimes those reasons are completely valid.
But there is something rather wonderful about rolling out your mat before the day has had a chance to ask anything of you.

At 7am, the studio is quiet.
The world feels a little softer.
You hear the birdsong, watch the awakening light.
You move. You breathe. You wake up your body.
And by 8am, your yoga is done.

Not squeezed in.
Not something still sitting on the list.

Done. For you.

The hardest part might be getting out of bed.
But I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone leave Morning Ritual saying, “I wish I’d stayed in bed.”

So perhaps don’t wait to see whether you feel like doing yoga.
Set the alarm.
Put your clothes out the night before.
Book the class.

Give yourself the first hour of the day, before you give the rest of it away.

Yoga doesn’t have all the answers but it’s a really good place to start.

Maybe it’s strength you want, improved flexibility and ease in your body, to reduce your stress, have better overall health, a stronger understanding of your own mind or simply a connection with others - a sense of community.

You will get all of those here …. you just need to show up.
💛

PS if you would like to share what yoga has given you or taught you, do share it in the comments. It might be help someone new to yoga decide to give it a try.

I used to go to the gym on my way home from work. Because I wasn’t a morning work out type of girl and once I got home and got involved with cooking dinner and then sat down I couldn’t get myself back out again.

And that’s why our 5.30pm class might be the perfect time for you too. A little time that you can set aside for you - not for your job, or your family - for you.

Because you deserve that time to take care of your body, your mind, your heart and switch off from your day before you arrive home.
Replenished, recharged, and rested.

✨Join, Nicola, Richard, Fran and myself at your perfect In-between place
