A great time was had by all at the Perth and Cowdenbeath class’s annual camping trip. We camped at the gorgeous Ruby Bay in Fife and even went for a wild sauna! These trips are very important for creating the community feeling that is just as important as attending the classes.

Krav Maga is an amazing community because it thrives on shared vulnerability, mutual respect, and practical empowerment. Creating a class that feels like a community is essential for building trust, safely testing limits, and enhancing mental resilience.

Why Krav Maga is an Amazing Community-

Ego-Free Environment:

Individuals from diverse backgrounds train as equals, leaving their external status behind.

Deep Camaraderie:

Engaging in physical drills fosters quick and strong connections through shared effort.

Mutual Support:

Experienced students assist beginners in learning at a comfortable, personalized pace.

Shared Purpose:

Everyone is driven by a common aim of self-defence, confidence, and personal development.

Why Class Community Is Important-

Building Trust:

Partners can safely execute close-contact strikes and grabs only when there is mutual trust.

Simulating Real Stress:

The collective energy of the group encourages individuals to push through fatigue during intense adrenal drills.

Emotional Safety:

A friendly environment allows members to confront fear, vulnerability, or past traumas.

Long-Term Retention:

People are more likely to return consistently and reach their goals when they feel socially connected and appreciated.

Perth students playing the ball game for a warm-up. The objective of the game is to keep hold of the ball no matter what, whilst your partner tries to remove it from your hand. Teaches mental strength I.e. you give the ball up easily, you give up easily when attacked; plus it’s loads of fun!

We did chair defence drills last night in class. It’s one of those drills: if you don’t know, you don’t know; and a little knowledge goes a hell of a long way, and it can save your life! It’s not as simple as grabbing a chair; it’s how you stand up and how you turn the chair to make it harder for the attacker to get to you that makes all the critical difference.

Training with a common object such as a chair is extremely advantageous in Krav Maga, as it enables you to utilise your surroundings, transforming ordinary furniture into a mobile shield, barrier, or distraction that can provide the crucial seconds needed to escape a violent situation.

The advantages of chair training include the following:

Instant Shielding:

A chair serves as a barrier to absorb or block strikes, hindering an attacker from closing in or delivering blows.

Positional Defence:

It instructs you on how to defend yourself while seated or how to rise safely from a chair without stumbling or exposing your back to an aggressor.

Expanded Reach:

Lifting and extending a chair enhances your personal reach, keeping an armed or hostile attacker at a safe distance.

Improvised Offence:

It teaches you to use the legs or back of the chair to push, destabilise, or strike an attacker, allowing you to escape.

Meet our instructor-

Mick Cairns

Mick is a former Royal Marine Commando who applies his military professionalism to his teaching.

With all his years in the Marines, he states that walking into his first Krav Maga lesson in Rosyth, Fife, was one of the greatest experiences of his life. He quotes, “I was hooked straight away! ”.

He stated that he has tried other types of self-defence systems before, but nothing grabbed his attention like Krav Maga. He mentioned that he noticed straight away that there was no ego, the moves were very effective and practical to learn and the instruction was second to none!

Mick applies his commando ethos and values to his training. The Royal Marines Commando ethos is defined by the "Commando Spirit"—courage, determination, unselfishness, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity—combined with the Commando values of excellence, integrity, self-discipline, and humility. This mindset drives them to be the first to understand, adapt, and overcome in the most hostile environments.

This mindset definitely helps when you are learning Krav Maga, too! Mick always tells his students that the main value that will pay dividends is self-discipline. It has so many meanings to it; one of them is that by dedicating yourself to a self-defence system week in, week out, builds resilience, determination and courage, but mainly self discipline builds the strength and discipline to fight hard when no one is there to give you instruction or to help you out!

Last night, to end our knife takedown/close quarter combat course, I put an isolation drill in the training. What is meant by an isolation drill is when you train with loads of space, it is easier to get your attacker to the ground, but when I limit the space, you have to think on your feet and adapt to your surroundings.

When I do these drills, I don’t tell my students what to do; I allow them to problem-solve for themselves. That way, they won’t panic in a real-life situation when you don’t have loads of space, when I won’t be there to egg them on/tell them what to do, and when there won’t be a referee to tell them when the fight is over. It’s the most realistic training I can give them in a controlled training environment!

I tried my best to simulate being on a train with limited space. As you might have heard, this type of attack happened last year – https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cp8py1n500lo. It could happen to anyone.

Everyone did brilliantly! I definitely would feel safer travelling with these students!

Last night, we focused on straight-stab defence, followed by practicing takedowns.

In today's world, learning knife defence is essential; simply watching the news on television will highlight this fact. Knives, along with all edged weapons, pose significant dangers – they are extremely perilous.

Regardless of your level of training, it is always advisable to avoid confronting a knife-wielding assailant. Do not attempt to "test your skills". The principle of avoidance remains the most prudent approach.

When it comes to defending against a knife, you may have two potential strategies: defend and fight back, or escape. I use the term "may" because escape is not always feasible; you could find yourself trapped. Consequently, last night we focused on techniques for control and restraint.

We began our session by throwing the knife to one another as a warm-up exercise. This not only prepared you physically but also trained you to evade the line of attack, enabling you to catch the knife without sustaining injury.

It was an excellent class, building upon the takedown session we conducted just two weeks ago, which is beneficial for reinforcing muscle memory. Excellent effort those that attended!

Monday madness in the Perth adult class!

Instructors getting "padded up" offers several significant advantages:

Psychological Pressure Testing:

This experience allows students to feel the adrenaline response—like tunnel vision and an elevated heart rate—in a controlled setting, aiding them in learning to think clearly and respond effectively under intense stress.

Full-Force Realism:

With protective suits, students can strike with full power. This is essential because holding back or stopping short can result in a poor understanding of distance and timing.

Overcoming the "Freeze" Response:

Engaging in full-contact attacks on a padded instructor helps students overcome the fear of physical contact and develops the muscle memory necessary to react instinctively instead of freezing during a real emergency.

Safe Dynamic Scenarios:

Unlike hitting stationary bags, a padded instructor can move, shout, and offer non-cooperative resistance. This compels students to adapt their range and technique in real-time while ensuring the instructor remains safe from serious injury.

Empowerment and Confidence:

Successfully "fighting off" an attacker (even one in armour) delivers a deep sense of accomplishment and fosters the self-confidence that they can defend themselves.

Looking to learn self defence?, why choose Krav Maga-

BOOST SELF-CONFIDENCE:

Krav Maga training is a great way to increase your body's general strength. Learning self-defence skills not only helps you stay safe, but it also sharpens your mind and boosts your self-confidence. Learning Krav Maga helps you overcome your fear of being attacked violently by simulating nearly every scenario that could occur in real life and teaching you how to deal with it. You will gain confidence in yourself and be able to defend yourself in the event of a threat thanks to the sessions and the useful and straightforward techniques you will learn.

IMPROVES YOUR FITNESS LEVEL:

Physical activity and raising each student's overall level of fitness are important components of Krav Maga classes. In addition to improving your fighting skills, being physically fit will strengthen your immune system, enable you to manage stress, and boost your self-esteem in general.

INCREASE AWARENESS OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT:

Learning how to avoid violence and physical confrontation, rather than just how to deal with and overcome them, is a major component of Krav Maga classes. During the training, we have to be constantly conscious of our surroundings and learn how to spot violent situations before they turn into an assault or altercation. We mimic a variety of real-life situations that we might encounter on the street and learn how to take advantage of them or quickly avoid dangerous situations should they arise. During the training, we learn how to recognise and be mindful of specific behaviors of others that could result in a violent attack, as well as how to strengthen our position to prevent or neutralise the threat should it materialise. We practice identifying and being conscious of the threat by continuously simulating various situations that could turn violent.
