😯 the human body is amazing

What happens inside the human body during an 80-metre breath-hold dive? 🤿

Researchers have taken arterial blood samples from elite freedivers at depths of 20, 40, 60 and 80 metres, providing the deepest direct measurements yet of arterial blood gases during breath-hold diving.

And the results challenged expectations.

Rather than continuing to rise with depth, arterial oxygen pressure peaked at around 40 metres before declining. Carbon dioxide followed its own unexpected pattern, increasing at 80 metres as metabolic CO₂ accumulated.

The findings offer a rare glimpse into how the human body responds to extreme freediving and could help researchers better understand the dangerous drop in oxygen that can occur during ascent.
