The Owls have suffered an early-season blow with news that Tyler Onyango will sit out the lion’s share of the campaign through injury.
The midfielder limped out of our 2-1 win at Leyton Orient last weekend and Henrik Pedersen delivered the bad news in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
He said: “I am so sad for Tyler, he has suffered an ACL injury and will be out for a long period. It could be all season, it will be long term for sure, and we must wait for the exact timeframe.
“Tyler is with the physios and the doctor and his situation will become more clear, for now we must wait.
“We wish him the very best in his recovery.”
In a more positive update, Pedersen reported no further concerns and will welcome Billy Mitchell and Yan Valery back to the squad for Thursday’s home game with Bradford:
“Everyone has trained for the full week, including Billy and Yan, so this is a big positive. Ricardo Santos is training and progressing well and it was great to see Di’Shon Bernard train as well.
"Dish was a part of a normal training game today and it is really good to see him confident on the pitch.
"He is a top, top player and we are all wishing him to come back.."

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing to welcome more than 32,000 supporters to Hillsborough on Thursday as the Owls return home under the lights.
The fixture will provide the first opportunity for supporters to experience a series of enhancements delivered across Hillsborough this summer, spanning both general admission and premium areas as the club continues its journey to elevate the matchday experience.
Supporters are encouraged to arrive early, with activity planned throughout the build-up to kick-off. The sounds of Sheffield will take centre stage across the stadium, while club legends will return to Hillsborough and enhanced production, including pyrotechnics, will add to the atmosphere.
As part of the occasion, the club has commissioned renowned Sheffield artist Tom J Newell to create a one-off tifo-style surfer flag that will be unveiled in the North Stand ahead of kick-off.
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust, whose support has been instrumental in bringing the display to life. The club would like to thank the Trust and the supporters involved for their collaboration and enthusiasm.
Alongside Thursday’s display, the club will continue to support the separate supporter-led Kop flag project. Following supporter submissions, independent shortlisting and a public vote, the winning concept will now be professionally developed before being unveiled at a future fixture.
The decision ensures both projects can be celebrated in their own right, protecting the integrity of the supporter-led process while creating an additional moment for Wednesdayites on Thursday.
Volunteers are required to help deliver Thursday’s display at Hillsborough. Supporters who would like to get involved and play their part in the occasion are encouraged to contact the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust at [email protected].
With a packed Hillsborough, the Owls back under the lights and plenty planned on and off the pitch, supporters are encouraged to arrive early, bring the noise and play their part in the occasion.

A message from the skipper ahead of a big night on Thursday:
We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Hillsborough on Thursday for our first home league fixture of the season against Bradford City.
To be named captain for the campaign is a huge honour and something I take great pride in. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. I’ll always try to lead with honesty and integrity, and make sure the team’s best interests come before and above everything else.
It’s been a pre-season full of hard work, with plenty of new faces coming through the door, and a few familiar ones too.
Both pre-season camps really helped set the tone for what we want to achieve and gave us an opportunity to strengthen the bonds within the group. There’s still plenty for us to work on, but I’ve been impressed with how quickly everyone has come together and embraced what it means to represent Sheffield Wednesday. I genuinely believe we’ll continue to go from strength to strength as the season progresses.
As players, we can’t wait to get back out at Hillsborough in front of you all. There’s a renewed sense of optimism around the club and we want to feed off that. We know how important our home form will be, and having a packed Hillsborough behind us week in, week out will be a massive advantage.
Behind the scenes, the owner and senior staff have been all hands on deck and have done a fantastic job in such a short space of time. There’s been a huge amount of work going on to get the club moving in the right direction and, as players, it’s our responsibility to do our part on the pitch.
We’ve started positively with two wins from two, and hopefully we can build on that and keep the momentum going.
Finally, I’d like to put on record my best wishes to Rob Cox and Alastair Wilson, two long-standing members of staff who have moved on to pastures new. Both have done some great work during their years of service to the club and I wish them nothing but the best for what comes next.
Enjoy the game on Thursday, get behind the boys and let’s make Hillsborough a difficult place for anyone to come this season.
