Match Report: Six Towns 1 - 3 Tipton
Well, to say yesterday’s match was frustrating and disappointing would be an understatement.
Carrying over from the preseason, it was clear from the start we wanted to be in possession and try to play through Tipton with quick short passing. Noticing how much space Tipton left behind the back line due to their high line allowed us to see that playing over the top was going to be a viable option this match. We had a series of clean breaks through on goal which ultimately led to Jordan Perry being hacked down in the box, giving us a chance from the penalty spot. Ant Allen stepped up and slotted the penalty into the bottom corner. We didn’t stop there and continued to play our game which led to opportunity after opportunity. Unfortunately, had we put away these opportunities, the match would have been over before it had started as we could easily have been 4 or 5 up at one point. A mental lapse in concentration later and Tipton scored a tap in to level the scoreline. At this point, our heads dropped a bit and we stopped playing how we were in the first 25-30 minutes. We went back to playing short passing and keeping possession, but our passing was a little loose with some misplaced passes losing us possession.
The moment when the match changed was when a Tipton player lost their footing resulting in a two footed challenge, studs up, catching Ant Allen on the upper shin pad and lower knee. Some words were had back and forth, but ultimately the red card challenge saw yellow and we moved on with the match. Minutes later saw a corner for Tipton which was cleared to the edge of the box where a Tipton player had a free opportunity that found the back of the net. The match began to get bitty but ultimately concluded the first half down 1-2 in a match we could have been 3-4 goals up in had we been more clinical in the final third and tighter in our own box.
The 2nd half is where we came back into the match playing well, leading to frustrations and tempers rising for Tipton. This eventually led to a spat that nearly saw the game abandoned as the referee called for a hydration break as to allow heads to cool. Ultimately, this didn’t cool heads and had players flying into tackles with some Tipton players even saying they were trying to injure players. We started the match with 17 players and finished with 11 as a product of this, one of which is having scans done today for potentially ruptured ligament damage. Down to the 11 we had left on the pitch, legs grew tired and we ended up conceding a late goal to go down 1-3 from what was a great finish from the top of the box. The goalscorer then ran up to our bench and manager swearing at them and showing him the middle finger. For this he received no booking.
None of this is to blame the referee as the ability to win the match was completely in our hands, but on another day, this match could have been very different. We’ll see Tipton away later in the season and the hope is we don’t see this kind of play again, but only time will tell and hopefully we have the training before then to shore up the issues seen from our play within this match.
We go again on the 23rd away at Solihull with a renewed attitude and training prior to the match on the 20th. Come on Six Towns. Vis Unita Fortior.
