Where it all began.

Before the Reformer became “on trend”, there was the Mat. Joseph Pilates published his original 34 exercises in Return to Life, and they need nothing but you and the floor. Simple to set up. Not simple to do. With no apparatus to guide you, the Mat shows you how much strength and control you really have.

The Cadillac is the one people tend to fall for. Springs, bars and a frame that lets you be supported or challenged, depending on what you need that day. It’s wonderful for stretching, for strengthening and for moving in ways that feel impossible on the floor.

Then the Barrels: the Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel and Small Barrel. They open the chest, stretch the back and undo a lot of what sitting at a desk does to you. There’s always a big cheer when the barrels come out.

Three pieces of apparatus, all built to Joseph Pilates’ original designs, and each one does something the others can’t.

Most of a teacher’s training happens where you can’t see it.

Hours of personal practice. Observing other teachers. Teaching practice, with assessments at every step. It’s easy to notice the finished version of a teacher, poised and correcting your form without a second thought. It’s harder to see everything that led there.

Ellie joined us in January and has worked through Fundamentals, Beginner and Intermediate training since. In her own words: “It’s time-consuming, but knowing I’ve led a class where everyone leaves feeling taller and more accomplished tells me I’ve done well by you.”

Is Happy Feet for you?

If your feet have ever been an afterthought, quite possibly.

Bunions, hammer toes, tired or achy feet, balance that isn’t what it was, or simply curiosity about the part of you that carries you everywhere. Any foot-related issue is welcome.

Becky leads the footwork on the apparatus. Jayne Drew, Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist, covers foot anatomy and soft tissue therapy. It’s hands-on, in a small group, and refreshments are included.

Saturday 24 October, 12–2pm. £38pp.

Meet Jayne Drew, Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist — and the other half of Beyond the Class: Happy Feet this Saturday.

While Becky's side of the workshop is footwork on the apparatus, Jayne's side is what's actually going on inside the foot: the anatomy, the soft tissue, the reasons a foot ends up tight, painful, or just not moving the way it should.

Jayne's been a client and friend of the studio since we opened. She's run anatomy training sessions for our teachers over the years, and took part in our Glow Up workshops a couple of years back too — so this collaboration isn't new, just the latest version of it.

It's a different lens on the same problem — movement and manual therapy, looking at your feet from two directions at once.

Beyond the Class: Happy Feet — Saturday 24 October, 12–2pm. £38pp, includes refreshments. Just 10 spaces - everyone welcome (even if you're not a member at the studio)

Start where you are.

Where you are today, in the body you have today, is a perfectly good place to begin.

Everyone who walks into our studio is starting somewhere. Some haven’t moved for years. Some are coming back after an injury or a break. Some have never tried Pilates and are curious about where to begin.

Classical Pilates meets you there. Our sessions are small and graded to your level, with a teacher who can see what your body is doing and what it needs next.

Starting is the hardest part. After that, it’s practice, a little more often, one layer at a time.

Two hours, ten spaces, and the part of the body most classes don't have time for: your feet.

Beyond the Class: Happy Feet is hands-on, not a lecture. Becky leads the Pilates side, working through footwork on the apparatus. Jayne Drew, Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist, brings the other half: foot anatomy and soft tissue therapy.

Bunions, hammer toes or any other foot-related issue, this is for you. We'll also look at how big toe flexibility and foot strength affect your balance, so you'll leave with a better understanding of how your own feet work.

Saturday 24 October, 12–2pm. £38pp, refreshments included. Once the 10 spaces are gone, they're gone.

A week in Portugal, in seven photos. 🌊

Training with Miguel at Uno Pilates Studio, a swan dive on the Reformer, and a lovely group of fellow Pilates people.

And then the bits in between: Portuguese coffee, sandy feet, a pineapple smoothie by the beach and a sunrise at the hotel.

I came home with a head full of new ideas, and a reminder that the best learning needs some space around it. Time to take it in, time to switch off, then back to the studio to put it into practice.

Where do you do your best learning, or your best switching off?

Even teachers need teachers. 🙌

My week in Portugal with Miguel at Uno Pilates Studio was built around the Wunda Chair, which you'll know I rate if you saw our carousel this week. On top of that, I had a private lesson on the Reformer and the Guillotine.

He picked up on how well my foot rehab has been going. Lovely to hear. Then came the best bit: he helped me refine my practice while still working around strengthening and rehabbing my injured foot.

I've come home with a fresh list of things to practise and I'm very happy about it. That's what I love about Classical Pilates: there's always another layer to find, whatever stage you're at.

Our case study clients will be starting on some of the chair exercises next week, and there's something new called Joe's Gym on its way. More soon. đź‘€

Two pieces of equipment. A world of benefits.

The Reformer was originally patented as the Universal Reformer — designed to reform your body. The springs and carriage "teach" your body to connect and move with alignment, building strength and endurance without excessive strain on your joints.

The result is functional movement for your daily life, improved sports performance, and genuine body awareness. It's a full-body workout, and the classical order works everything in balance — to truly reform you.

The Wunda Chair works differently, and that's exactly the point. With barely any support, it teaches your body to generate strength and stability with just the help of a small platform and a pedal. It's brilliant for balance, for building leg and glute strength, and for the kind of control you actually use every day — standing up, climbing stairs, carrying shopping. It works the strength within your flexibility too, and makes a great complement to the Reformer.

If the Wunda is too much initially, try the High Chair — it has handles and a backboard to give you feedback and help with balance, until you're ready for that support to be taken away.
If you want to know where to start, the Reformer would be it for most of you. (Hint: it's what Becky's been doing four times a week.)

Which one have you tried — Reformer, Wunda Chair, or High Chair? Tell us in the comments.
