Lets hear from Matthew Reeves, about his journey to the World Championships in Poland 🇵🇱
Q1. How old were you when you started Taekwon-Do, and what made you give it a try?
I was 36 and had just come out of lockdown. My son was watching martial arts videos online and decided he wanted to give Taekwon-Do a try.
At SCTKD, an adult can train for free alongside their child, so I initially only intended to join for a couple of sessions to help my son get up and running. But I quickly caught the bug and never looked back!
My daughter started about six months later. I’m now a 2nd Degree Black Belt, and both of my children are 1st Degree Black Belts. What started as something I did to support my son has become a huge part of all our lives.
Q2. What do you enjoy most about being part of the club?
The family feel and camaraderie. Everyone supports and encourages each other, regardless of age or ability.
I also love the structure and variety of what we learn each week, and the high level of knowledge and experience our instructor passes on to us. There is always something new to learn and another goal to work towards.
Q3. What did it feel like representing your country at the World Championships?
This was my 30th competition and my 20th as a Black Belt. I had competed abroad three times before, representing my club and association, but representing my country was something completely different.
It was a huge honour and easily the highlight of my Taekwon-Do journey so far. Standing there representing Great Britain was a very proud moment and something I’ll never forget.
Q4. What has Taekwon-Do given you outside of winning medals?
Friendship, fitness and improved flexibility, but so much more than that.
Most importantly, it has given me the opportunity to have a hobby that I can share with my children. Training and competing together has created so many memories for us, and that has been amazing.
Q5. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying?
Just give it a go!
Taekwon-Do really is something you can start at any age, and it’s extremely inclusive. It’s a great way to make friends, get fit and learn something new.
It’s also a great way to spend an hour away from the pressures of everyday life — whether that’s school, work or family commitments — and just focus on yourself, learn something new and have fun.
And, if I’m honest, there’s something quite therapeutic about kicking and punching a big pad — especially after a stressful day!
