It’s completely normal for children to feel nervous when trying something new. The key is to support them at their own pace.

1. Give them time – Don’t rush them. Confidence grows when they feel safe.

2. Let them watch – Seeing other children having fun can help ease their worries.

3. Join in with them – If your class allows, being by their side can make all the difference.

4. Celebrate every achievement - Whether it’s stepping onto the mat or joining in for a few minutes, every small win deserves praise.

One of the biggest red flags in children’s martial arts classes is the coach to student ratio.

If one coach is trying to manage 20, 30, or even more young children on their own, how much individual coaching is each child actually receiving?

Martial arts isn’t just about keeping children busy for an hour. It’s about building confidence, developing proper technique, improving discipline, learning respect, and creating good habits that last a lifetime. None of that happens effectively when a coach is stretched too thin.

Every child learns at a different pace. Some need extra encouragement, some need corrections to their technique, and others simply need someone to notice when they’re doing well. When there are too many students for one coach, those important teaching moments are often missed.

A great martial arts class isn’t measured by how many students are on the mat, it’s measured by how much attention each student receives.

At Success Martial Arts, we always aim to have at least two coaches in every children’s class, with our busiest sessions often having six or more coaches on the mat. This allows us to give every student the individual attention, guidance, and support they need to learn safely, build confidence, and reach their full potential.

An easy tip to help staying composed with combinations coming your way is Controlling the lead hand. This can help control distance along with using this control so that you can put most of your focus on the other hand about to throw next.

Give this a go next time you spar and see the combinations coming while staying composed.

For anyone wondering martial arts skills do not translate to frisbee golf accuracy.

We got the whole coaching team out for the afternoon on Saturday. Safe to say we won’t be quitting the day job anytime soon.
