Why Small Classes?

As we're almost halfway through Disability Pride Month, I wanted an excerpt of an article I wrote around my thoughts on why small classes can be beneficial for Neurodivergent students, particularly in the martial arts space.

"One of the first things I decided when making the switch to full time coach is that I really wanted to focus on what makes a class accessible. Without the large investment of my own martial arts studio, where I have control of the lights, sounds, textures, etc, focusing on accessibility can be a challenge.

The largest area I can focus on, regardless of renting a hall, training in a park, or any other place that may limit some of the sensory controls I have is to focus on class size. Rather than a class of 20, 30, even 50 students (which I've experienced and found much more difficult for my specific brain to manage and enjoy), I aim for a simple number of 10 students. I like this number (as the sole coach for now), as it allows coaching to more focused, and communication can more easily come from a varied approach (non-verbal, easily visual, etc). "

Along with our Balintawak Classes, Winding Path Martial Arts Academy also provides training in the staff style of Aikibojitsu. But what is Aikibojitsu? Founded over 40 years ago, it is a study of movement and power through non-resistance. Coach Scott has been lucky enough to have been training in Aikibojitsu for over 15 years, and sites it as a major tool for body mechanic awareness, power without "fighting" the movement, and wonderful moving meditation.

Perfect for those looking for both low body impact and powerful movements, the search for the "perfect line" in any Aikibojitsu Kata can be something strived for as long as the practitioner wants to delve into it.

We will be offering classes in Aikibojitsu in the coming weeks, and welcome anyone who'd like to join in the North Dublin area to reply with "Interested" in the comments, or message us directly. 🙂

Summer shifts the rhythm.

Neurodivergent minds often feel that change more deeply.
Gentle structure, like small habits or scheduled tasks, predictable moments, slow transitions, can make this seasonal shift less jarring. It’s not about restricting your summer freedom, it’s about nervous‑system safety, keeping your own pace.
