🇯🇵🇮🇪 Celebrating 70 Years of Japan–Ireland Diplomatic Relations

We’re pleased to announce that our Autumn International Takemusu Aikido Seminar, celebrating five years of Takemusu Aikido Society, has been accepted for registration as an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland.

Aikido has its roots in Japanese culture and tradition, and through our practice we’re fortunate to share a part of that heritage here in Ireland. We’re delighted that our anniversary seminar can also mark this important milestone in the relationship between our two countries.

🥋 International Takemusu Aikido Workshop 2026

We were delighted to welcome Brendon, Dojocho of Takemusu Aikido Midlands and a student of Lewis Bernaldo de Quiros, to our Balbriggan Dojo for an intensive day of training.

We spent two sessions on the mats, exploring both taijutsu and bukiwaza.

Taijutsu – Shomen Uchi Iriminage

The first session focused on different variations of Shomen Uchi Iriminage, exploring how the technique changes depending on the entry, the connection with uke and the direction of movement.

🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage (one-hand collar grip)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage (one-hand chin)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage (Kihon)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage Ki no Nagare (choosing the direction)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage from Gyaku Hanmi (“please go”)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage from Ai Hanmi
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage (call uke’s hand but avoid contact)
🔹 Shomen Uchi Iriminage (raising uke’s hand and entering through the variation)
🔹 Zagi Kokyuho

Bukiwaza – Kumijo

The second session was devoted to Kumijo, working through the first five paired jo practices:

🔹 Ichi no Kumijo
🔹 Ni no Kumijo
🔹 San no Kumijo
🔹 Yon no Kumijo
🔹 Go no Kumijo

The training was intense but engaging throughout. During the practice, Brendon offered many useful advices and corrections to the members he paired with, helping them to improve their techniques.

A big thank you to Brendon and Takemusu Aikido Midlands for joining us and sharing the practice. We look forward to continuing this exchange between our dojos!

🥋 One Principle, Different Forms: Tai Jutsu, Tachidori, Jodori.

In this clip, we’ve brought together footage of Morihiro Saito Sensei demonstrating the same techniques in different contexts and placed them side by side for comparison. Watch closely how the fundamental mechanics remain unaltered as the circumstances change, whether in empty-hand practice, sword-taking or staff-taking.

This connection between taijutsu, aiki-ken and aiki-jo is at the heart of Takemusu Aikido. We’ll explore these connections with Jöran Fagerlund Sensei at our 5th Anniversary Takemusu Aikido Seminar in Dublin.
