Tokyo Crusaders Rugby Football Club

Est. 1990, Tokyo Crusaders Rugby Football Club is a friendly but keen international rugby club in the Greater Tokyo Area.

Tokyo Crusaders RFC was founded in 1990 by players from Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, including the management team of Ian Brahne (NZ), Kevin Coleman (AUS), Stewart Henwood (NZ), and Andrew Carroll (IRE), who were seeking an alternative to the airball style game played in Japan at the time, and wanted to bring real rucking, mauling and scrummaging to The Big Mikan. The first training session was held along the banks of Tama river, and months later the Cru played their first ever game against Itochu, on 23rd September, 1990 – ending with a 20-8 win. Attracting a motley crew of Irish GAA, Rugby Union and League, Aussie Rules and American football players, the Cru played 23 games in their first year – recording an impressive 18 wins against 5 losses, with 398 points for and 104 against. Via a sponsorship with a local rugby goods manufacturer a team uniform came about – sky blue jerseys and socks with black shorts, and for the second season the team emblem – a Crusader sword down the centre with the word “CRUSADERS” at the top and the kanji characters for “TOKYO” at the bottom, split by the sword – made it on to the kit. The second year saw player numbers increase, and 15 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses were recorded during 24 games (385 points for and 219 against) – including a tour to Manila to play a game against the Manila Nomads. The Cru has since continued to attract players of various backgrounds and abilities, and remain as competitive on the field as socially active off it. Thanks to everyone who came out today and made the best of our postponed match.

A big thank you as well to YCAC for helping make the session happen and for hosting us on their pitch.

It was a great chance to get some rugby in, work through a few things, and keep building toward the season.

🏉 SUNDAY RUGBY UPDATE 🏉

Due to unexpected circumstances, our scheduled match against the Keio Hirayama Highlanders on Sunday, October 4 has been postponed. A new date and kickoff time will be announced once confirmed.

However, rugby is still on this Sunday.

Instead, we’ll be holding a Cru vs Cru joint training match at YCAC, with some players from Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YCAC) joining us as well.

It’s a great opportunity to get proper game time, work through in-game tactics, and sharpen things up ahead of our first league fixture.

📍 Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YCAC)

Meet at YCAC at 13:00, or Yamate Station at 12:45 for the short walk to the pitch.

Players: please bring black shorts and a mouthguard.

🏉 日曜日のラグビー予定変更のお知らせ 🏉

予期せぬ事情により、10月4日（日）に予定されていた慶應平山ハイランダーズ戦は延期となりました。新しい日程とキックオフ時間は、決まり次第お知らせします。

ただし、今週日曜日もラグビーは開催します！

代わりに、Yokohama Country & Athletic Club（YCAC）でCru vs Cru形式の合同トレーニングマッチを行います。YCACの選手も数名参加予定です。

実戦形式でプレーする機会を作り、試合中の戦術を確認しながら、シーズン最初の公式戦に向けて準備していきます。

We held our first training of the season with a HUGE number of new boys (and girl) joining us.

今シーズン初のトレーニングを開催し、たくさんの新しい仲間たち（女性も！）が参加してくれました！

There is still room for more players on our team. Our next training session is on Tuesday, September 29, at Akasaka Elementary School.
We’ll then face the Keio Hirayama Highlanders in our first match on Sunday, October 4.

FIRST TRAINING — THURSDAY

📍 Onarimon Elementary School
⏰ 19:00 start

Approximate travel times:

• Shinjuku: 25–30 minutes
• Shibuya: 25–30 minutes
• Tokyo Station: 15–20 minutes

From Onarimon Station, use Exit A6 and walk toward the elementary school. Look for the footbridge overpass, then find the spiral staircase going up.

Climb a few flights to reach the pitch on the school roof. You’ll find the Crusaders waiting there.

Bring your boots, workout gear and a good attitude. New players are welcome.

らせん階段を数階上がると、校舎の屋上にあるグラウンドに到着します。メンバーがそこでお待ちしています。

Registration Night was a resounding success. Huge turnout from all. Crusaders old and new pledged their support for the 2026–27 season.

John Carter put in a huge shift this season, going from zero rugby knowledge to being an invaluable asset on the pitch. USA, USA, USA! 🇺🇸

Alex Boyle joined the exclusive level of Crusaders who have been an active part of the club for five years or more. Cheers, Alex. 🍻

🏆 Captain’s Choice Award and Ironman Award

Awardee: George MacIntyre

G-Mac put in the most cumulative minutes and outworked nearly everyone. Huuuge shift that resulted in him being picked for not one but two awards.

⚔️ Special Recognition of Taro Hasumi as Shuto League Representative

Taro-san is irreplaceable in his dedication to keeping us in Shuto League’s good graces.

🌶️ Dick of the Year
Presentation: Alex Boyle
Awardee: Reece Horii

Despite being a phenomenal club president, Reece committed treason by playing as captain of YC&AC RFC at the Mac Cup this year. Found guilty as Dick of the Year by a trial of his peers, he expunged his sins by drinking a goblet of hot sauce-laced milk.

⚔️ Special Recognition of Sean Gibson for Eight Years as Tokyo Crusaders RFC Manager

Despite having a heart attack, Gibbo is still the beating heart of the Club. He passes managerial duties to Josh while retaining his committee seat. Thank you, Sean.

🏆 Clubman of the Year

Awardee: Liam Mortimer

Liam was selected as Clubman of the Year for his tireless coaching and dedication on and off the pitch. He took us from being individual players to being a team. Thank you, Liam.

🏆 Player of the Year

No one leads from the front like our Cap’n Geo. Not only does he talk the talk (a lot), but he walks the walk. Top try scorer for the Cru this season and all-around badass.
