Mid Canterbury Cricket Association

21/09/2026

Mid Canterbury Cricket Association warmly invites you to join us for the official launch of the 2026/27 cricket season and the opening of our upgraded Pavilion on Saturday, 26 September from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Ashburton Oval Pavilion off Park Lane.

This is an opportunity for us to come together as a cricket community, celebrate the progress that has been made, and look ahead to an exciting new season. We will have Black Caps and White Ferns also in attendance so a great chance for the players to meet some of their heroes, or to get a “selfie”.

There will be plenty happening throughout the morning, including fun games and activities for children including the inflatable dive mat, obstacle course and bowling alley, making it a great event for the whole family. People will be able to have a wander through the pavilion to see all the changes they have supported too.

For our clubs, sponsors, supporters and fundraising partners, the event is also a chance to see the progress and improvements made to the Pavilion facilities, and to acknowledge the contribution of everyone who has helped make these developments possible.

We would love you to join us as we officially kick off the 2026/27 season on a high, celebrate what has been achieved together, and look forward to the future of cricket in Mid Canterbury.

Mid Canterbury Cricket had a lot of involvement with Richard and wish to also pass on our condolences to all his family and friends. A sound voice for Canterbury Cricket over many years who made the effort to see the wider district players in his time and many will remember him with his notebook viewing all the players at our underage tournaments.

A sad loss to the cricketing community.

RIP

We're saddened to hear the passing of Richard Hayward, who spent 12 years at the heart of Canterbury Cricket's coaching and talent development.

Richard joined CCA in August 2002 as Director of Coaching and Development, later holding the titles of Director of High Performance & Coaching and Performance Manager. Across that decade, he worked closely with coaches throughout the region and helped shape the pathway for a generation of Canterbury cricketers.

He left in 2014 to become General Manager at Nelson Cricket, where he'd also played and was made a Life Member.
Our thoughts are with Richard's family, friends, and the many coaches and players he supported throughout his time in Canterbury cricket.

Over the coming weeks, we have a great opportunity to ensure our coaches are aware of the wide range of virtual learning opportunities available to support their development prior to the cricket season.

IT'S FREE !!!!!

Coaches can engage in a variety of virtual learning options, including extension modules, as well as core Development and Advanced Development sessions. These provide a valuable way for coaches to continue their learning and development in a flexible format.

You can find out more about these sessions here https://play.nzc.nz/virtual-learning-opportunities and see when the different sessions are being held on the poster attached.

A great opportunity to get in the right frame of mind and upskill too.

NETS UPDATE

The new indoor nets have been installed and completed today. We now have a retractable middle net lane to allow for a wider area to practice fielding and other drills. This retracts easily but don't pull down on it or put unneeded pressure on it as we want it to last.

As you can see we have yet to replace the flooring as we are still trying to raise enough funds to complete the job how we would like, but for people wishing to hire the nets for training and practices they will be available from tomorrow (Saturday 8th August to make bookings via Mark Medlicott.

All the details can be found about hiring and a calendar showing available times on our website at https://www.mccricket.co.nz/indoor-net-bookings

Thanks to Perennial Sport for the installation and to again to all those who donated funds, time and energy to help this project. It certainly looks a lot brighter with the new lighting, painting and if you can't improve your skills here, the problem might be something else 😃

All users please keep it tidy, use the rubbish bin, take your bottles and gear with you and leave it as good as you found it.

Mid Canterbury Cricket is again offering a pre-season training programme for male and female players between the ages of Year 7 right through to Year 13 which are held in the Ashburton Oval Pavilion Indoor Nets and run by our Game Development Officer Taine Cordell-Hull.

* Note the holiday programme for Year 2 - 6 players registration form will appear tomorrow.

The programme includes four x two-hour training sessions covering all the fundamental cricket skills and we try and make groups of similar age and/or skills to enhance some of the personal coaching aspect for the individual.

The cost for the four sessions is $115.00 else $30 a session but priority will be given to those who register for all 4 sessions.

Details of how to pay will be on the registration form but we will also send details when groups are confirmed.

The Programme starts on Monday 14th September and finishes the week of October 5th. Generally it will run from about 3.30pm for the younger players through to 9pm at night for the eldest but will be subject to numbers registered and the subsequest groups we create.

Registrations are essential so we can try and arrange times and groups and these close 30th August so that we can give you information early to plan your lives (and your Mums and Dads).
